Well..Deep down i had a feeling that when i put it all back together it would do the same thing!!!..I thought i would fill it up and get it to operating temperature to see if the thermostat opens...It gets to 85...Coolant starts rising a little..Gets to 88 thermostat should be fully open..Bottom radiator pipe is still cold..Gets to 90 and starts pishing out of the header tank and only the top of the recored fking radiator is red hot and the rest is cold as a corpse...What a pile of fking st i own...Ive just spoke to the ford guy and he said if you have got a quinton hazel thermostat in there it wont open so i have had to order a ford one from them which should be here monday..What a load of bullocks..Ziga

Right i just tested the original thermostat that i took out of it which the ford garage fitted last year against the QH one..The ford one is brass and looks better quality and apparently has a two stage opening mechanism which is meant for bottom situated stat housings..The QH one does look a bit tinny..Anyway i tested them both at the same time in a saucepan and the ford one started opening around 86 degrees C but the QH one was still shut...It is supposed to be fully open at 88..By 97 Degrees C the ford one was fully open as stamped on it but the QH was only half open so maybe there is some truth in it..I will re-use the ford one as it seems to be working..I just hope i can re-use the outer housing gasket as i dont have any left...Please dont rain on me tomorrow god you bd..

Paul if i win the lottery i will buy a veyron and forget all about TVRs....But i will throw a massive BBWF style event every year where the Booze..Food..More booze..Will be FREE..There will be lashings of babes stripping and pole dancing along with a pick n mix feature where you can pick any three girls and make their T-shirts wet and with whatever drink you so desire.....There will be a runway for burnouts and quickest 1/4 mile times with a prize of the best tyres fitted before you go home..It will be one big party that goes on the whole weekend..The furthest travelled will be reimbursed in fuel money as a prize..(Both ways)..And there will be gallons and gallons of rusty on tap.. ..Cheers..Ziga

Oi..Your married..behave yourself..Of course if i did win the lottery and held such an event then it would be on a no need to tell the missus basis....
Well im either blessed or my luck is changing..I was sitting here moping around and thinking WTF am i going to do with my Hellcar when i remembered that a while back i purchased a head gasket set...I inspected the box and only found the inlet mani and the head gaskets..After lots of swearing..It suddenly dawned on me that i must have put the rest of the set somewhere else.....One of my safe places that you never find anything in..But there was a smallish padded envelope and on closer inspection contained all the small and easy to lose bits from the set...Including a new front,Rear gasket and rubber sealing ring for the thermostat.....Im gonna put a couple of quid on the lottery tomorrow..I just wish i had written down the dates that i had worked on the car, You never know it might be a hidden winning number combination..Im begining to think if there is a god its a female and shes having a right bubble with me...Maybe just tweek her nipple when we finally meet..

Starting to open at 88 is not earlier enough on a Colougne.
I've no need to tell you where it's located

If you consider a nice running temp to be just over 80, with the bu66er at the bottom it has to open earlier so your nice new rad can do it's job.

I would suggest a 75.

Hi Jeff..Originally..Well before i stupidly poured bars leak in it amd much more recently K seal which i think finished the rad off it was running up to 184 degrees F which is what the book says..The fan was coming on as the stat opened..Where would i get a stat with a low rating?..Im hoping once its all back together tomorrow that it runs how it did before i put the ste in..Cheers..Ziga

Thermostats BEGIN to open at the temperature stamped on them. It takes a few more degrees after that to have them fully open. A 88C thermostat will not be fully open until about 93C. Do you have the opening temperature of the Ford thermostat?

For the manufacturer, the happy running temperature for your engine's coolant is between 88C-96C. They do their best to keep your engine there using the opening temp of the thermostat and the "on" temperature of the rad fan switch. There are different dangers running the engine constantly outside of this range, whether lower or higher.

Hi Mate..Yes the Ford one has 97 degrees C stamped on it but it starts to open around 85-86 and by 97 it is fully open as i tested it yesterday in a saucepan with a probe thermometer..I will set the fan to come on just after the thermostat has opened on the car..I beleive this is the correct way to have it calibrated..Cheers..Ziga

Does your thermostat have a small bypass hole on the flange and a little wiggly pin in it? if it doesn't Then drill a couple of bypass holes on the flat flange to allow a small amount of bypass. Only small say 1/8". This also generally helps when you have airlocks in the system.

we generally do this on racers which allows a small bypass of air / fluid past the stat at all times but not enough as to compromise performance of the stat itself.

When you fill the car, heater to fu;ll on, Hot position and fill with the front of the car as high in the air as you can. I always fill and squeeze all the pipes as I am filling to push the air around the system

If you are worried about airlocks to the heater matrix then also disconnect the return and fill the car until you get a constant flow of water flowing from the outlet then quickly put it back on the union and carry on filling the system.
