After another £200 bill for my fking FIAT, I'm getting rid of the damn thing. It spits out broken parts faster than NEW PARTS (ha) can be put in and it's ruining me. And it's only a fking diesel hatchback at the end of the day. I've got a few months left on my insurance, after which I'll have a years no claims, and I want to actually get a car that I've always wanted.

To that end, I'm looking at E30 325is. I know of a good number of people who with limited mileage pay very little for their insurance through classic car insurers. At 24, with a years NCB, I'd hope that I could get a good deal, so I intend to start looking around now in anticipation of being shot of the unreliable little bh.

So, the questiony bit. E30s, a good idea? Yay or nay? And do any Pistonheaders have recommendations for classic car insurers? Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I take my first steps into proper petrolhead territory, i.e. rear wheel drive and petrol. And not FIAT.

Owned two E30s; fantastic cars, especially in 6 pot guise. However the biggest thing to check for is RUST. They do love to rot. Check the rear wings/boot especially. Also pay extra attention to cars with body kits (especially MTech2) they are great at hiding rot and making cars look better than they are.

Also with 6 pots beware of HG failure, check temperature and water levels well, also the usual mayo checks. If you look carefully and find a good one then they are reliable and rewarding to drive cars. Good luck.

I've been running a 12985 E28 for 5 years with no bother at all, 100% reliable and cheap to sort come MOT time.

My wife runs a 1993 Merc SL and likewise its easy and cheap to run.

90's cars rock.

Ok, rust and HG the main things to be wary of, along with the usual checking that there's no condiments under the bonnet. I'll also be wary of bodykits... I'm not entirely sure I like the MTech2 kits anyway, but I'll be careful.

Any other 90s cars that might fit the bill, throw them in!

Yeah, maybe not the best time to start driving a RWD car. But if you don't take chances in life, you'll never get anywhere!

Of course I do run the risk of taking a chance and quite literally not getting anywhere, but hey. It should be fun biggrin

On some classic policies you won't accrue any No Claims, just keep an eye on the t's and c's

In some cases, they generally don't care if you already have any NCB or not

ETA - try Footman James as a starter. And watch out for rust on the scuttle panel smile

You might be onto something there.

Dammit.
