thinking of getting rid of the E46 m3, for a 911 C4S around 20k,anybody had both ??
I've had both. Well, actually 3 (2001,03,04) E46 M3's and 1 2002 Model 996 C4S. It depends on what you ae planning on using the car for really? I owned my C4S for exactly one year, to the day!!The Porsche seemed a little more "special", and certainly attracted more attention with it being wide bodied and Speed Yellow. Telling folk you drive a Porsche gets the attention, a BMW not so much, because most folk don't know what an M3 is!! But that's only if it bothers you? In certain circles I have to say, I would always prefer telling folk I drove a Porsche (I know, I know!!!) Lol.
The Porsche was better on track. Not any faster in a straight line (well, never felt like it either was faster!?), but better in the corners and under braking.
I had more niggles with the Porsche than any BMW I've owned, and mine was a particularly nice example with full Porsche history, every extra possible and lowish miles.
Personally, I bought the Porsche to scratch an itch, but it didn't really do it for me. I should have bought a GT3, which may have made me happier?? I sold the 996 and bought an E92 M3, which over the years is my 7th M3, maybe I'm biased? I probably wouldn't have held onto a GT3 any longer to be honest.
My cars are every day cars, and maybe do 1 or 2 track days a year. Speaking from the point of view that you will be using it in the same way, I would stick with an M3. Even stretch to an E92 if you can????? They are getting cheaper now!!! Or get a good late E46 on an 05/06 reg??
Are C4S around the 20k mark now? When I sold mine it was cheap at 26k, just over a year ago with 44k miles.
