My windscreen has a large crack in it. I have cover for this on my insurance. Just looking for a bit of advice before I book it in to get fixed.

I've heard there are a few different types of windscreen available on the E46 M3 coupe. Some are "Climate Comfort", some have a "Green Shade Band" at the top (which mine does), and some are just plain.

As I didn't buy my car new, I don't know which one it was ordered with. I want to make sure that they replace like for like, or a better option.

Also, I recall some people demanding OEM BMW screens, rather than the generic screens that fitters normally supply. Should I do this? Are there big differences in quality?

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

I'd prefer an OEM screen but all in all there would be little difference between the OEM and copy. You can always tell a climate comfort screen as it will have a purple tingle all the way through it. The green band as you mention is just across the top.

Have a look on RealOEM, but a green band was the default screen in most cases. If unsure ring up a dealer and ask which one your car should have.

OEM supplier should be able to spec it from your VIN unless it was an upgrade or optional extra - but it should show up.

Other than that, you can narrow it down by the year (modified rain sensor if it has one) and the tint/tint combinations are easily identifiable if you're on the phone (can talk you through it if you're near the car).

You don't always have to go with who your insurer prefers (and the 'nominated' repairer loves to use the word 'approved' when imho it's a bit mis-leading).

Give Allan Love at Euro Windscreens a call - top bloke and I use his firm a lot.
