Both my wife and I each have breakdown cover as a benefit of our bank current accounts, so we just take what's given. A question in the Honest John column of today's Telegraph however, prompted me to think about the small print and whether I'd be better of choosing my cover more carefully.

Did you know, for example, that if you are visiting one of this country's lovely inhabited islands, that although the RAC will come out to you, you have to pay the ferry and/or toll fees for their vehicle? And that the AA will not, as part of your membership, provide recovery from the scene of an accident you are involved in (and that includes punctures from running over debris)?

What cover do you use (poll clicky thing) and what made you choose them? And do you know of any other odd cover exclusions?

The RAC don't cover you for RTA related issues either. Both companies will however recover you for a nominal charge which can be claimed back from your insurance whos remit it is to deal with road traffic accidents etc.

I'm with RAC, who have been pretty good (used 3 times in 3 months). The only thing that pissed me off was having to pay nintey-five fking pounds to get towed 20miles home because I was outside their 10mile zone. I'm sure it's in the small print somewhere but FFS.

That's interesting to know and makes sense.

The RAC were slated on watchdog this week, quite rightly too, i used to be with them and they were less than useless.

AA

2 recoveries in 2 months, exceptional service too.

We drove back over the snake in a 2nd car while he towed the broken one.

We set off at the same time and he somehow beat us home!

AA has always been good for me, apart from their habit of trying to rip me off at renewal time.

I've had to use them five or six times in the last eight years. They've always arrived when expected, never given any hassle at all, and have not yet failed to get the car back on the road... which probably means I keep calling them for the simple things, but still, can't fault them.

I haven't tried any of the others.

Regardless of how good they are at recovery , about equal for the sake of argument, please be careful.
My car broke down a few months ago. Aa diagnosis - supercharger imploded . Actual fault - fuel pumps failed

I use GEM as they cover me, not the car, and there is no age limit on the vehicle.

Used the RAC a few years ago when the motor had a complicated fueling issue requiring several callouts, and found them to be great. If only I could have found a mechanic who was as happy to work on my grey import instead of bursting into tears and waving his arms because it had different body panels from a mechanically largely identical fairly common UK vehicle, I might have been able to keep that car.

Anyway at least one of AA/RAC support the loony anti-car pressure group BRAKE, so if purchasing cover today I'd knock whichever one that is of the list immediately.

+1 for Gem. Seem to have the best deal if you have motors 10yrs and over..

Autonational Rescue, and Gem are operated under Equity Red Star. They were one of my clients, along with GF,AA, RAC and Call Assist.

My membership is with Autonational Rescue. Having dealt with the others, and knowing where they stand on RTC's and specialist equipment charges, it's a no brainer.

Autonational Rescue here. Bloody brilliant service, AIUI they use local garages as opposed to their own fleet (happy to be corrected) but when my mum's car was having issues we never had to wait more than 30 minutes no matter where we were.
