So there I was mowing lawn when I thought that I might as well do the bit out the front of the neighbours house and mine, as usual.

Just as I finished I looked over my car at theirs in time to see the rear window turn frosted and start spitting out bits of itself...

Now obviously there is no question that I will be responsible for the damage and would rather pay now than over the next 5 years in increased house insurance so can anyone give me an idea of the likely cost as right now all I can find are sites where they want me to register 1001 details. Not after hard and fast figures but a ball park would be a good start.

2009 Audi A3 2.0 Quattro.

Cheers.

If you go to an independant, I'd expect the glass will be somewhere between £100 and £150.

If it's i a rear door, expect to pay £50 for fitting. If it's bonded to the rear quarter (three door), more like £75.

I don't understand how you broke it. Did the lawn mower kick up a stone?

Thanks for the quick reply.

All I could find that answered the question before was US prices which were about $93 for the parts and $235 for the labour at an Audi dealer there.

Hopefully he'll get it fixed by an Indy then. He's already said he'll sort the repair out, that he's not touching Autoarse as they're usually ott on cost and we've put the car away safe.

Unless it was a freak self implosion, aerial attack or act of god it would appear that that is the only answer. I saw no stone, there was not obvious culprit inside the car or about it, but the only logical explanation is that it was one kicked up by the mower. The initial hole was very small but it expanded swiftly as the glass cracked more and more frown

Funny thing is that it totally missed the 968 although it must have flown over the bonnet at a fair old lick!

Why not offer to pay the excess for glass replacement from their insurance policy? (assuming they are fully comp) generally this won't be more than £100.

As its just glass replacement, this won’t affect their policy no claims etc in the future.

Had it been my car, I would be happy with this though I suppose it depends on how well you get on with your neighbour.

They don't want to go through their insurance due to the effect it might have on premiums and whilst I know it might not affect them I don't know the details of their policy. In all honesty I would rather just pay up the necessary and have done with it. We get on well and for the sake of saving a few £ I'd rather just do whatever makes life easiest for them, and therefore me.

If it were £500+ worth I would be thinking a little differently.

3 door or 4 door.

You'd be surprised at how cheap glass can be from Audi itself. My S3 passenger window from Audi was £27..! Brand new complete with Audi rings on it!

Indy was £70 for the same glass.

If it is a 3 door, it is very simple to fit, if a 5 door, less so, but only about 45 mins for a pro

Just to update.

Spoke to the neighbour last night and they are going to put it through their insurance now as, as suggested here, they have checked and found that it will not affect their policy (The one with the sailor)other than the £75 excess on glass claims.

So an expensive day on Saturday, but not as bad as it could have been!
