Hi everyone,

This evening i had the scariest moment of my life and my mini is probably a total loss. I was doing around 55 down a straight bit of back road when 3 deer ran out almost immediatly infront of me. To avoid them and so as not to go on the other side of the road and risk hitting an oncoming car i chose to try and go behind them by going on to the verge.

The wet conditions and uneven ground pushed my car into an unrecoverable spin as i tried to get it back on the road. I found myself going backwards with no brakeing ability to the point that i thought i had stamped on the clutch and not the brakes. I end up in a wood with a very nasty impact. The car is destroyed and i'm a bit shaken. I have been thanking God that there was noone on the other side of the road as i came across it backwards. I am also glad i went in backwards otherwise i dont think i would be talking to you guys now.

I just wanted to post this to remind people of the dangers of b roads and also to perhaps ask for advice on what happens now. The police came to the scene but are not prosecuting as the dynamics of the crash match what i told them. Can anyone tell me what happens now with regards to insurance?

Thankyou.

You claim, they pay for your car, plus any damage to road furniture and 3rd party fences etc.

Glad you're alright.

that's the kind of incident I dread, where all of your options are contact with something. I would have probably hedged on hitting the deer and taking front end damage but then again I've heard the horror stories of people being killed by large animals they have hit.
sounds like you were lucky, glad you are ok. I can't really help re: insurance but if your history is decent and they're happy with the circumstances of the crash it shouldn't be too bad.

Very good.

Yep the last thing i wanted to do was hit a big deer. If it had come through the windscreen it would have killed me. I am just so glad no one else was involved.

You did the best thing I think. One deer would be bad enough but three would be a real mess regardless, and as you said you may have ended up on the wrong side of the road.

The worst bit was going backwards realising i hadnt scrubbed much speed and was just waiting for the impact.

Certainly the most important thing is that you are uninjured. Sometimes there are just events beyond your control. I was once hit at a 45 degree angle from behind three lanes away by someone in a high speed spin that destroyed my car and pinned it to the wall. There was no way out. I think you did as well as most of us would have done.

Glad you're OK and nobody was injured OP. I'm sure the Police will have an incident number which you provide to your insurers as part of making a claim and they'll sort the rest.

Gald to hear you are okay. Cars, petrol and venison are all luxuries. Car insurance is fking vital.

Thanks. It just came off the verge so violently, i did my best and had the oppo on quickly but i dont think that one was ever coming back. The thing i may have been able to do was ensure the car went in backwards rather than head on. I genuinelly think if i had gone in head on a branch would have decapitated me.

I wouldn't, all the fawning over wrecked cars is creepy.

'To avoid them and so as not to go on the other side of the road and risk hitting an oncoming car'

I'm confused by this, there was an oncoming car or there could've been?

Surely if there wasn't and it's a straight bit of road then you could've gotten past them on that side whilst being able to see a car up ahead?

In any case though it sounds like a horrible incident so thankfully you're okay and that's the main thing, the insurers and police will sort it out.
