At work today i discovered that my workmate has replaced his crusty old Escort with a black 06 plate RX8 (231bhp version). Nothing unusual about that apart from the fact that he views cars as merely devices to get from a to b and of no more importance than white goods.
When i asked him why he'd picked the RX8 he stated that he "liked the look of it, its got 4 seats and it was a good price"!. When i mentioned the 9,000rpm rev limit and the much vaunted handling i may as well have been talking about a washing machine, though he did say that it rode better than his Escortrolleyes
Does anyone else have to put up with this type of non-petrolhead nonsense?

My father-in-law is now the proud owner of an Alfa 155 and he knows NOTHING about cars other than how to drive one.

The fact I sold said Alfa to him probably means it doesn't count! biggrin

There's a bloke at work with an RX8, he's never had it above 5000rpm! I thought he was joking when he told me, but he wasn't, and he's owned it for 2 years! what a waste.

No-one will ever believe him when he uses that as a selling point, will they?

Probably saves a fair bit of fuel though.

When GM in Oz started making the Vauxhall Viva they called it a Holden Torana.

When they developed it for racing they developed a straight 6 version, with 3 twin choke Weber carbs, among the many improvements. All these were painted purple.

After test driving a four pot Torana, a couple of non petrol head school teacher friends of mine decided to buy one.

When she said she liked the purple one, & that is what they were sold.

A week or so later he asked me to tell him what all the carbs were. When I explained what they had done he said “that explains why the repayments were quite a bit higher than I was expecting”.

I work with one chap bought a Yamaha Fazer brand new 3 years ago. He loves bikes and is always chatting about them to fellow biker guys.

Not once has he taken it over 5000rpm. Mental.

There's a guy on my shift who has an un-molested X-reg Impreza. It's the sort of car that you'd expect a car enthusiast to own, right? I'd seen him pull up in it on his first day at our place, and we ended up working together that day. I know a bit about them, but I was just making conversation...

M: "I noticed your Impreza in the car park, it looks pretty tidy."

H: "Yeah. I've had it about 2 years now."

M: "Ah, nice. So what made you particularly go for a UK-spec car then?"

H: "What do you mean?"

M: "Well, you know... as opposed to one of the various import versions."

H: "Umm, I dunno."

M: "Right. So you didn't fancy a WRX or an STi or something then? Those are usually about 276bhp if I remember rightly."

H: "Erm..."

M: "Soooo.... yours is the 208bhp one then, I think?"

H: "...dunno. I want to get some of those Lexus-type rear lights though."

Just kill him and take the Impreza purely on the basis of his last comment.

Anyone who wants 'Lexus-type lights' should be removed from the gene pool.

Why do some posters on here expect anyone who owns a nice car to have an almost autistic interest in them?

I like to have nice kitchen appliances, but I wouldn't know the difference between one model and the next on the shop floor.

The funny thing is that he and the rest of the people you work with that he has told probably think you're a monumental tt.

I think you may have met my IT teacher; he had an RX-8 so I assumed he was into cars, until one day he mentioned that he had to put his foot down to join a road and only then realised it 'had a bit of oomph'...

You're absolutely right, that's really funny! It was merely an ice-breaking first conversation, you pillock.

Oh, and the fact that we're actually really good friends would back up the fact that he thinks I'm a tt rolleyes

My final reaction of that conversation was simply at his Lexus light owning aspirations, I wasn't knocking his lack of interest in the car. He had a nice performance car, I assumed he was an enthusiast - what a crazy assumption.
