On drive last night started to hear tappety noise from offside of engine, stopped and checked and it appears on revving but not there at idle. Drove carefully and can hear it when engine is under load but absent when cruising. There is no loss of power and all guages read as usual, suspect manifold gasket or manifold, hope its just gasket, but how do I check it and is it ok to drive car as nearest TVR garage is 40miles away ?? Any ideas on cost if manifold itself is leaking, can it be welded ?

It's often the centre of the four into one manifold. Easy to repair leaks here with exhaust repair putty. I did this repair years ago and it's OK so far. You do need to be careful because any putty geting through the leak may block the precat. Just ram the puty in and warm it up. Best done in several layers because it needs to cure and it does so through its surface.

I found my leak by doing this - Link to method

Here's a picture of the leak test

This is kind of like the sound I've been hearing in mine, but I had my manifold gaskets all checked and replaced? hmmmm

What sort of cost is involved in replacing gaskets ?? Been quoted 2.5 hrs labour for one side which is going to be expensive if I go for a total replacement..

Is it ok to drive car carefully in meantime ..

Mine had this problem, TVR use a stethoscope style listening device to get under the Manifold and exhaust pipe run across the maifold. As said before it can be sealed with exhaust paste. Mine was underneath where all the pipes join together (which is very difficult to fill)

There is a big problem with welding this area cos it really needs to be done from inside!!

It is possible to cut through the joint area, weld it from inside, and then weld the cut back in!!

Yes it can be done. Far cheaper than a new one?? just hope its a gasket!!!

Thanks to all for info, started from cold and had a good feel around manifolds before burning fingers off, about 15 secs, nothing found so off to local garage to let them listen to it, hope its just gaskets !

OK, the man from Del Monte says its not exhaust, definitely from the rockers, as before audible at rest and under load not when cruising. He can inspect rockers and measure gaps but did not sound too confident, sounds like I should find TVR specialist.
Any clues to the noise source please and is this looking expensive ????

Ok , thanks for your thoughts. After consulting a TVR garage the consensus is back to gaskets as other items like rockers make a different sound and appear all the time.
So result is its booked in next wek to have both sets of gaskets done on both sides and have the pre-cats taken out as well, I had been considering this and the situation makes it sensible to do now. Fingers crossed that it goes well as I am missing the remaining good weather before the dreaded snow arrives again !

No its much lighter and only comes on under load, which made me think rockers but apparently that noise is there all the time..
