Myself and 3 friends have hired a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 and the new Maserati GranTourismo MC Stradale for a supercar day on Thursday, September 29th. We live near Newbury in West Berkshire and are looking for great driving roads in either West Berkshire or North Hampshire (out round Basingstoke/Winchester) to make the most of our 24 hire day.

If the route can also include a really great pub where we could stop for lunch all the better :-)

The length of the A272 starting from Winchester is always a good call. Quite a few good pubs along it also.

Also A32 from Basingstoke to Wickham - early morning best or late at night.

Don't forget to seek out Morestead Road, an absolute hoot!

Newbury - Basingstoke (A339)
Basingstoke - Alton (A339)
Alton - Wickham (A32)
Wickham - Bishops Waltham (B2177)
Bishops Waltham - Winchester (Stakes Lane/Bellmore Lane/Morestead Rd)
Winchester - Pepworth (A272)

Turnaround and do it in reverse (Oh, allow about £300 in super unleaded and don't forget there is usually a mileage limit with the hire!)

B4494 Newbury to Wantage simply is the best road around the south IMO and on your doorstep.
But if you are in Basingstoke and wanted to come to Winchster at vmax then take the A33 parallel to the M3.
The guys above have said all the other gooduns

I know what you mean, but ooh, there are a lot of crossroads and hidden farm entrances along there - quick, yes, vmax, no IMHO!

Nice one guys. I'll try to work out a circular route for the day that includes as many of the roads you suggested as I can. Two bits of bad news is that I've had to push back the day now into October so crossing fingers the roads aren't soaked in rain and the Maserati was too booked up so we're going with the V12 Vantage instead. Not sure about the Vantage but it will be interesting to put it up against the Gallardo.

The good news is though that I get a chance to drive a F458 and the Maserati in early November with some other friends.

Any ideas on a good place to cruise about in the evening with those two cars is welcome.

The masa is a shed compared to the V12V, down a twisty b-road the Gallardo will not see which way the V12V went. I was lucky enough to drive a V12V back to back with a f430 scud and as a road car the V12V was better, the scud was better on track. Just watch the speedo though as you will be travelling incredibly fast to have fun (unless it is wet and if she is wearing the track based tyres, them you will be very busy), enjoy! A pic outside the Crab on the B4494:

Thanks for all your advice. The V12 looks really nice outside The Crab at Chievley. I think it's pretty much the colour of the one we're looking to hire. Interesting that you say it's a better drive than the F430. I didn't think much could touch that for thw twisty stuff (except the F458 perhaps). Agree with you on the Lambo though. I was underwhelmed when I drove it but it's a popular choice with the other lads coming out on the day. Compared to the 599 GTB and the AM DBS I didn't rate it.

Did go to Sandbanks last year when we hired a Ferrari 599GTB, Aston Martin DBS and the Gallardo LP560. Had a great time down there - parked outside the cafe at Sandbanks that was on the Piers Morgan show and had a good chat with some of the "minted" locals. Went over on the car ferry to Corfe Castle and blasted around that area. Weather was cracking as well.

Had a small incident in one of the car parks though whilst we were down there. You can see what I mean at this You Tube link:

This is the route I've plumped for based on the advice received:

Meet at Nelson's American Diner on the A339 near to Newbury
Take A339 to Basingstoke
A339 Basingstoke to Alton
A32 Alton to Wickham
B2177 Wickham to Bishops Waltham
Bishops Waltham to Winchester (Stakes Lane/Bellmore Lane/Morestead Rd)
Winchester to Whitchurch on the A34
B3400 from Whitchurch to Overton
B3501 frrom Overton to Kingsclere
Kingsclere back to Nelson's American Diner to finish

We have abou 125 miles per car to work with for the mileage allowance so should be OK for this circular route.

Yeah - not a great comment but what can you do! I s'pose if you put stuff out on You Tube you have to expect that you might get some dodgy comments.

It was my mate in the DBS. I was in the 599 behind them and thought at the time "he's taking that a bit wide". That's when I heard one helleva noise and thought that he'd taken the front bumper off and his £1,500 security deposit was gone. Luckily for him the central section had a ramp up and the DBS drove up it - the noise came from a metal plate hanging down which, we guessed, was exactly what it was there to do and protect the important bits. He did ground the car and we had to lift it a bit so he could reverse off but no damage done and he kept his security deposit.

Thanks again guys for the advice and recommendations on the route. If we're going past any of your houses and you fancy a look and go in the cars just let me know and we'll swing by.

Thanks SadlerJ - got your email and be great if you can join us for some of the route and do the whole supercar blast convoy thing. As soon as the details lock I'll drop you a note and we can figure out a meeting point. As it currently stands I am booked out for 2 days with different cars but I'm trying to wangle it so all the cars are on the Nov 1 trip. If I can't swing this then it will be as below. Welcome to join us on either or both.

October 13 - Gallardo LP560 & V12 Vantage

November 1 - Ferrari F458 & Maserati Grantourismo MC Stradale
