I had a good poke around the new M5 at Silverstone yesterday, and I must say that engine is a masterpiece. The Turbos are nicely on show in board of the V and the new watercooled intercooler 'boxes' were also impressive. It seemed very compact, maybe compact enough to put into a 3 series, 578bhp in a 3..wow. All the toys on the inside were also fantastic. I thought the car looked more "steathly" than the E60, IMO, which is a good thing. Very much liked what I saw, cannot wait for the test drive!

Think the official figures are 560bhp, which is still the worst and smallest power progression in next generation M5s ever made. I've been very verbal about how dissapointed I am in BMW giving us just an 11% increase power over the rather wonderful V10 M5s.....

Still having now owned an F10 530d for a while I must admit I DO like the car... STILL dissapointed in the crap performance of 560bhp though!

I do hope you are joking, 560bhp, or whatever, in a family car is sheer madness really in the real world. Personally I got rid of my M5 cos of the lack of low end torque (for a family car to make stealthy progress in, not for a play thing where engine revving is a must) and this will be addressed with the blowers.

Er. You are wrong.

E28 M5: 282bhp
E34 M5 (upon launch): 311bhp. ( 10.2% increase, 29bhp extra)
E34 M5 (facelift): 335bhp ( 7.7% increase, 24bhp extra)
E39 M5: 394bhp (17.6% increase, 59bhp extra)
E60 M5: 400bhp/507bhp (depending on mode) (1.5-28% increase, 6-113bhp extra)

So it is only the two most recent generations which have given >11% increases.

How much power do you think you need in a 4 door saloon, that is usable on the public road? Anything over 400hp and there is the constant issue of traction control reigning things in.
Torque is where it is at for laying the power down on the road - and even this has a ceiling. Ask any Mercedes S65 owner...

At the HQ in Bracknell BMW had a black one they were loading onto a transporter yesterday - looked brilliant, sadly I wasn't carrying my phone so couldn't get a shot..

My only gripe about turbocharged engines is that while they have loads of torque and horsepower usable in real world driving conditions any exhaust note or intake bark is muffled by the turbo(s) and lengthy intake and exhaust systems. So great for helping to meet noise regulations but an aural disappointment.

Over on M5Board there are some excellent pictures of the engine:

Having previously owned a turbo 4 cyl, and a NA V8, I've always dreamed about a turbocharged V8 configured like this engine with the turbo's between the heads in the V...
