Battery?

Can anyone recommend a decent battery for an S2??

This one comes up that often I'm surprised there was not a FAQ for it... maybe we should gather the info on this thread then FAQ it

Take a look in Search Chopps as there should be quite a bit about the make and rating as well as the physical size as you need to be careful it fits the battery tray and can be secured well when in place. My battery is a "Banner" and has been trouble free, cant remember the rating, but its the right physical size too although I dont clamp the base, I use a luggage strap over the whole lot

Physical size is important as the top of the battery is close to the underside of the bonnet and I have seen star cracks on a couple of S's where the terminals have pushed against the GRP.

The original battery clamps aren't great, but you can get a ratchet strap (as in Kevin's pic) from a DIY store which will do a much better job.

If the car is not used for significant lengths of time its a good idea to go for a calcium type battery as they are more resistant to sulfation of the plates which is common with lack of use.
Halfords do a calcium version of their batteries but they do cost a bit more. If you know someone with a trade card that knocks about 40% off.
I think the size on my S3 is 069 but will check tonight. (just checked, its a Halfords HCB096 which fits the tray nicely and is slightly lower in height than some. Maximum cranking amps 680.)
