Dont bash it, not the usual Xbox 360 vs PS3

Right hopinh this hasnt been covered before:
My mate has just upgraded his first gen Xbox 360 with a new unit (GOW3 package) and so has kindly given me his old one.. great!
Now all i really thought i'd do with it was play GOW3 online with him but its got me looking at Turtle Beach Head Phones so i can communicate with him and actually hear something. I then had the thought well why dont i buy COD4 for it when its out later in the year as i'll be buying gold membership to get online anyway?
But should i?
At the moment i have a perfectly good PS3 which i've used to play the COD series on and a few other titles i.e. GT3
Would the lack of HDMI on the Xbox 360 really detract from the experience and put it down vs a PS3 for clairty of picture?
Also is the Xbox360 community anymore mature than the PS3 which is usually littered with 10 year old idiots who scream for no good reason down the mic noises which i find annoying!!!
Anyway should i invest in other games on the 360 or keep it just for GOW3/

Speaking not from what I hear but from owning both I would say it's broadly the same. The better thing about X-Box though is that You can doa party system and speak to all Your friends even if they are playing different games if You wish. Very useful if You are playing Gears or Battlefield and don't want to listen to the randoms on Your team.I only turn my headset on if there is one of my friends in the lobby, otherwise I never bother as nobody plays team style anyway!
COD on xbox isnt tooo bad, not many folks have there mics turned or they are in party chat. But as with any game on any console, you still get the annoying kids screaming and shouting, abusive players and players who try to ruin things for you. When I play cod I just take my mic out unless playing with friends.
As for which console to get games for, I'd say use which ever console your friends have. As for the HDMI thing, I didnt notice much difference going from one to the other but my TV is just a cheap one from tescos.

Early 360s can output 720p or 1080i through the component out HD lead.
Most multi-format games are so close it really comes down to controller preference tbh (Digital Foundry do a lot of 360/ps3 comparisons, and historically the Xbox edged the equivalent ps3, but the playing field is level now, perhaps swinging in favour of ps3 for Battlefield 3).
Certainly keep the 360 for Forza 4. 3 kicks GT5's arse in my experience.

You'll get just as many kids on both, so I wouldn't bother using that as a factor.

as already mentioned a couple posts above, the older xboxes still output in HD, via the component cable. my elite xbox has recently thrown in the towel (RROD) so am back to using my original xbox (although thats "original" number 3.. due to other rrod's!..) and tbh sat about 5ft from my 50" 1080p plasma there is no real difference in the 360 elite via hdmi and the old xbox on component 720p. you could probably tell with side by side tests, however im just as happy gaming on the xbox as i am with the ps3 (hdmi) on the same tv.. both images look awesome and running in "only" 720p (v's 1080p) its still a fantastic image.
as mentioned get the games that your friends are playing on whatever console.. gow is def where its at though..
