Ok, requirements; under £6k, petrol or diesel, as new as possible with as little miles as possible, near 40mpg on the combined, hopefully over 100hp! I think that's about it!

I suggested a Suzuki Swift Sport or a Fiat Punto, but both were met with a 'yuck, don't like them' [why for god sake, the Punto looks like a little Maserati hatch]! She wants a Mini which I think is a good idea, and there are plenty around for under £6k, the only bad side being for this budget it'll be a good few years older with more miles than a Swift or Punto. The idea of an MX5 also came up but I reckon she needs something more practical.

I say over 100hp as I'd like her to experience a bit of performance.

My other ideas; Renaultsport Clio of some kind [might be a bit thirst?], Ford Puma [to old], VW Lopo GTi [to small].

Might be hard to beat a Mini, even though it would be a bit older than a few other choices smile

Had a similar dilema and went for a mint MK4 GTI Anniversary. Major service work and parts have all been done and it's a classy car. Ours has a lot of chassis modifications which makes it a very fun car to drive and I can also get 40mpg on a motorway.

The 1.8T you mean? I was looking at the TDi versions of these for myself, pretty damn hard to find a decent one now-a-days though.

Yes we have the 180bhp petrol one. The diesel is very good but they've suffered from either being very expensive to buy or having mega miles on them which is no problem for the engine but the trim and other parts they do tend to wear a bit. Ours is just coming up to 90k but looks like this:

These any good? The Fiesta ST did pop up on my maybe list, and I'm sure my OH will enjoy 150hp, but I'm not sure I've ever read a good thing about them!

Just thought I'd bring up my old thread again....my OH has a bit more cash now, so we're talking up to £8k.

Mini [she'll get a Mk2 new Mini Cooper for 8k] is still at the top of the list but I'm really liking the idea of a Clio 197. A quick look on the used Renault site brings up a lot of 197's for 8k with low-miles - the only issue with this is potentially the increase in costs to have it [insurance, fuel, tax]. Has anyone got experience of both to compare costs?

The Twingo 133 is also a possibility as her budget will get her a near new car smile

Left field suggestion, why not get her to drive lots of cars and buy the one she likes?

It's not just about what she likes, it's about cost too.

Yeah, but at 8k, you've got lots of choice. Mini's , fiat 500's, clios etc so pick 5 or 6 local to you and go drive them, even if she likes none of them you'll know what not to look at next! Maybe even a convertible Porsche 944 wink

It's very definitely a buyers market at the moment.
