Gimp-how do i get rid of background stuff?

I hired a studio and shot some friends, the background was not large enough for the group size, anybody on here tell me how to make the background all white?

Have tried but just had a fairly major op, 30cm of colon removed last tuesday, not much energy for learning.

It looks like a simple clone stamping to me. (after correcting the unevenly-lit background)

Thats easy for you to say!!!I havent really had too much time to learn that, where should i look for advice?

I don't know Gimp, but with Photoshop (assuming you want a bright white background), I'd paint out the background stuff (umbrellas etc) with a white brush (or crop it off and extend later) and then lighten the white background with the dodge tool set to dodge highlights only. Most of the "subject" matter is midtones and shadows, so this should work reasonanbly well.

Now wait for someone who really knows what they're doing to tell you how to do it properly!

It was my first go in a studio, it was the only local one i could find.
Next time i may take a larger background

Figuring this out was like having an epiphiny for me! The easiest way to do it by a country mile!
