Blame parking charges and excessive business rates. Frankly, I'm surprised that we have any shops left on the High street.

Santander pledged not to close any Abbey Nationals, so it looks a bit stupid in some towns.

Don't talk nonsense. Your Benevolent Council knows what is good for you.

There's no doubt the High St is having a hard time right now. Restaurant business has become very patchy too.

So, you rarely used the services there and yet you are surprised that they have gone.

hehe . . . . on a serious note, Happy is of course correct, any cost analysis and market research or even anecdotal evidence points towards and almost systematic destruction of independent retailers in the UK.

Sir David Henshaws destruction of the music shops in Liverpool in order to have the area redeveloped is a widely known example of a council actively seeking to destroy the high street and force the populous into the jaws of huge corporate shopping centres and of the evil empires of Tesco and Wal-Mart

Try Reading - 14 Tescos stores in total, including 2 massive Extras.

Oh, and a distribution centre planned - I'm not surprised though!

Ah well, no great loss. Room for more houses.

This is where its at

"“Much of the overall retail sector’s growth in both the US and the EU over the next five years will come from the Internet,” said Forrester Research"

Anyone having spent any time in Oz/Au/US etc will see that large chains and online take the bulk.
Sure you can make some money servicing outliers, but thats what online sales are for.

Close the high street down, its just an excuse to clog the roads smile

In our town center the county council removed the "first hour Free" parking and decided to charge from the start of parking. much to the protest of the town councilors.

The town suffered and the takings from parking went down.
Some people found a few free on street parking places.

The County councils response is to paint more yellow lines. This is supported buthe town council.silly

No one goes into town any more so the town is fked.
