Many people don't realise you can eat this, but it's both edible and good. The flavour is a bit like roasted sweet chestnuts.
From left to right, outer shell, inner kernel, inner kernel toasted and peeled:

This year the kernels are plump and juicy, and on a windy day like today, it's coming down like confetti.
I simply toast the kernels in a dry pan until they start popping, sprinkle with salt, peel and eat as a beer / wine snack.
