I happened to pick up an old (April) copy of Autocar magazine at lunch today. I was reading about the new cars being unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show.
Among them was a new Rolls Royce Ghost for the Chinese market - stretched to give more legroom. Duh?

Its a big demand in China...they have China-only stretched 5 series, A6s and so on. A big part of status is a stretch black car with a driver. I have seen lots of them there.

Been to China a couple of times - any saloon car of value is long wheel base. Bloody things are everywhere.

It's about status - what's the point of buying a lwb car if it's subtle and people can't tell? The opposite of here where a lwb car is criticised if it looks obvious.

Let's not forget the B5 Passat LWB, better known in this country as the Skoda Superb.

New car tax in China is based on the class of car so buyers tend to buy a class down from what they might and go for a LWB version so car makers produce things like BMW 5 series LWB that is the size of a 7 but gets the tax of a 5. Same thing for RR as the Ghost LWB will be cheaper in terms of tax than the Phantom.
