Evening all,

I'm currently driving my 350i through Europe with a group of friends, however my alternator has started to pack up. I will be travelling through turin and Milan tomorrow and I'm certain there must be one for sale somewhere.

Only problem is, is that i have a very limited internet connection to Google. So my plea for help is if anyone could do a bit of googling and text me an address that looks promising (without going too far into town if possible)

My number is 07900 837173.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and I'll definitely owe you a beer!

Hi, if it helps (my alternator has just started to pack up too !) disconnect the thin red wire during the day as if you have the same problem as I do (battery light stays on) it sounds like a knackered diode and the alternator will actually be discharging the battery with the red wire still connected. Even with the ignition off. May save your battery for a bit !

Hope you've got something sorted, but if not, try this trick:

You're fortunate to have friends in other cars travelling with you.
If the batteries are roughly similar (connection posts), run a 'relay' system, whereby you swap batteries back and forth between the cars every few hours.
This way, the 'dead' battery is being charged by a car with a good charging system, and the charged battery will slowly discharge in the car with the bad charging system.

In theroy, you could carry on with this system indefinately.
It should at least get you to somewhere which has an alternator!
