We're ripping up the carpets towards the end of the year and fitting... well something. It'll be a solid top rather than new carpets and the local flooring fitter has recommended Amtico Spacia. It looks good and seems to be hard wearing as one of the posh local salons has it and with the amount of stripper-issue stilettos going through there it seems to keep a good appearance.

Here are my initial thoughts:

Looks good, lets get it.
It's not wood though it's just a posh looking rubber tile.
I know it's not real wood and that'll wind me up.
Is it worth the price over natural wood or engineered wood flooring?

Have any of you chaps had experience with this stuff and am I living in the olden days by just wanting proper wooden floors?

Cheers,

David

We had exactly the same choice for the hall in our last house.

Mrs wanted the Amtico and I was quite impressed until I saw the price.......
" How much? For posh lino. No way woman"

So we went and got some Karndean ( Amtico's cheaper competitor) fitted. Looked superb and really easy to clean and look after. Most impressed.

In our present house we went for the even cheaper 13mm engineered wood oak planks properly glued to the concrete floor, rather than floating about on bubble wrap.

The result is superb, even though I laid them myself. Well pleased with the result.

And it enabled me to use endless variations on the "I've got wood" joke as the Mrs went about her housewifely duties whilst I glued relatively expensive veneered plywood to the floor.

Cheers,

Tony

Cheers, Tony. Food for thought for sure. I'm going to get a few quotes and recommendations in and shop around. The idea of spending 3k on that Amtico stuff just doesn't sit well with me.

Another vote for Karndean here. When Mrs Flipper and me were redoing the house we looked at Amtico flooring and we just couldn't justify the cost.

We ended up laying the Alderney version in our kitchen and hall, we're very pleased with the result, easy to keep clean and better still, I've dropped a couple of plates on it and they just bounced and stayed in once piece, I definitely couldn't say the same for our old tiles.

Including latexing the floor it took just over 3 days to lay, I'm glad it wasn't me doing it......

not cold on the feet, wont vary in color like some real wood floors and will last 15 years plus! its hard wearing and difficult to slip on

check out camaro by polyflor, this stuff will lead the way very soon! its all LVT. (luxury vinyl tile) at the end of the day!

takes a while to fit though!

also take a look at cavalio clic, LVT that just clicks together like a laminate, we did a job in a blonde wood color earlier this week!
i liked it soo much ive ordered some for our bedroom smile not cheap at nearly 50 quid a meter though.

Not wishing to turn this into an 'I love Karndean' thread, but I've fitted three kitchens for friends (and myself) now and love it.

+ as mentioned above, dropped plates live a bit longer
+ Its not quite so cold as stone / wood
+ The black stone tile with slim wood trim looks awesome.. its even fooled a few folks
+ Yes it is 'posh lino' but when youve got it and go in someone elses kitchen with any other lino / tile you really notice the difference
+ With a bit of planning and care you can do it yourself and get some great effects

If you want

stains

dents

then vinyl is fine

and don't drop a knife on (into) it!

sorry I hate the stuff.

Amtico is off the list now in favour of some QuickStep Oak laminate. Looks a mile better and is rock solid.

I've also saved over a grand...

What about Balterio? Similar to Quick Step.

Looks and feels like wood, has a 25 yr residential guarantee and one year in, its about the only thing that has survived our young dog perfectly!
