Vet lost our Cats ashes (following from my post couple months ago about putting her to sleep)
We paid to have individual cremation and ashes returned to us. Error by Vet meant she was cremated with other animals and ashes are gone.

Vet have sent my wife some flowers and offered us £250 (£150 of this is the costs/refund) so £100 compensation as gesture of goodwill.

I'm not bothered about the money side and appreciate it's just human error (at least they have admitted it) but the thing that has upset us is the fact they have asked us to sign a declaration stating we will basically not make any claim against them now or in the future..they are just coivering their backs but I'm a bit offended about this part (we have no intention of suing them)...what would you do?

By giving the money they are pretty much admitting liability, so I'd say they're just covering their backs to avoid bad publicity or ongoing hassle. It is a little insensitive but sadly that's the mindset businesses have to take now.

I know it's hard when you've lost an animal but it seems like a fair offer. Assuming they've been good vets in general I'd be inclined to bung the compo to the cats protection league and leave it at that.

A vet once topped my cat, then sent me a vaccination reminder six months later...

Their liability insurer is possibly asking them to ensure that any compo paid now is in full and final settlement. It is standard stuff, please do not be offended, it is a way of them protecting themselves.
You can of course refuse their offer if you wish.

Shirley if you were the vet you would bung the owner any old ashes and deny all knowlege of a cock up.

I am not saying its right but...

I think they are right asking you to sign, some folk would take the money, then sue anyway, so whats the problem.

I am sure some smart laywer would convince you regardless of accepting the money, to sue anyway. We live in a world where folk will sue if there is a smattering of money at the end.

Unfortunate about the cat's ashes, fortunately we got ours back and she is resting in the back garden, hard not to feel for them when they are with you for 20 years.

With the ease with which they could of done this, I think they've done the decent thing admitting their mistake and offering some recompense.

If you have no intention of suing them, why be bothered about signing a form confirming it?

Appreciate it's an emotional time losing a pet and all, but it's nothing to get the hump about, they're just trying to protect themselves from chancers who'll sue for anything they see a quick buck in, presumably because they'll be insured against it but their excess will be massive. It's not a selective thing that they've opted to put under your nose because you look the type, it'll be standard practice.

Quite.

I would accept gladly, to be honest I wouldn't be in the least bit bothered anyway it was a mistake that has been admitted, are you going to keep all the ashes of animals you've owned over the years? Seems a tad silly to me.

I have not said any of the things which boiled up when I first read the OP. Whatever happened to burying them in the garden?

Atleast they were honest. They could have scooped up anything & passed it of as you'r cats ashes. Not nice though & I wouldn't be happy if this was me.

What's that got to do with the OP's post?

in 20 years just the 2 cats, so yes we probably would keep the ashes!

fully appreciate they held their hands up and admitted it. Practice manager was very sympathetic & sincere about it all. we just felt the dec was rather formal but as people say it's probably insurance requirement.
