Infra red with an unconverted Canon 7d - anyone managed it?

A long shot I know but hours and hours of reading stuff on the general internet only gives contradictory answers, so I'll do what I should have in the first place and ask the PH togs:

Has anyone, succesfully, managed infra red photography (strictly speaking "near IR", I realise) with an UNCONVERTED Canon 7d and if so how?

Intended subjects are lanscape so I'm not worried about exposure times of 30 seconds or whatever (yes, I know about the problems with noise) but I've followed all the instructions I can find on the web (setting a custom white balance from a picture of grass with the R72 filter on etc.) and the results don't look very different to ordinary black & white (after converting to gray scale on the laptop)

Don't want to get another body just for IR if can help it as I can't justify the cost and my back's already complain about the amount of gear (photographic) that I'm lugging around the countryside, but am I wasting my time, trying IR, with an ordinary 7d?

I don't think any IR without a converted camera is worth the time or money for the filter, the results just look like normal photographs with a bad colour cast to me.

I'm probably going to get a D70 and a 650um conversion kit for astro.

Thanks rxtx - you've confirmed what I've been thinking, I'll give up for now and start saving the pennies for a converted body
