New Lens choice

I've just got some shares thru my company share save scheme and I'm thinking of treating myself to a new lens with the proceeds. I want something fairly long for motor sport stuff really. It's for my Nikon D5000, so ideally should be AF-S.

I've heard some really positive stuff about the Sigma 50-500. It seems to get better reviews than the 150-500 whilst also offering an absurdly flexible range, at a price of course.
I suppose the biggest downside is the f/6.3 aperture at the long end, especially once you stop it down a touch to sharpen things up. I suppose only you know how that'll affect your photography.
A couple of other options in the same sort of price range would be to get a Nikon 300mm AF-S F4 or a used Nikon 70-200 2.8 and if you need the range, a 2x teleconverter. Neither options would give the flexibility of the sigma but I would hazard a guess that IQ would be better.
