well, the E21 is finally up for sale after i slapped 12 months MOT on it the other day and i'm wondering what to replace it with.

generally i want something more refined, 6 cylinders, and good on the motorway. i've driven an E34 535i and loved it, such a good capable car. i think i could pick a decent one up with £2k but wondering on other options. an E36 325i seems to be well within budget but you need to look pretty hard to find one that hasn't been tampered with. i'm much more drawn to the E34 barge-ness. trouble is, i think having driven a 535i i might be underwhelmed by a late 525i with the M52tu engine, it's almost as powerful, but it's torque is so much higher in the rev range and so i think it'd feel a little strained in such a big car (but probably ok in the lighter E36?). the 525i also revs considerably higher on the motorway....is it much noisier when sitting at speed...such as 90? the 535i was going about 3300rpm IIRC in 5th at 90 meaning it was doing sod all work, but i think the 525i revs at about 4000rpm which is a fair bit higher...is this noticeable in terms of noise through the cabin?

any other thoughts chaps?

having said all of that, it's been about 3 days and i've only heard from one bloke who is interested...but he can't view until mid october as he's from guernsey! i'm in no hurry to sell though smile

thanks

This. The 528i is the best you can buy for the budget OP.

728i is the best bet IMO.

Had one for nearly 2 years as a 6 month fill in. Fantastic car. Bought for £2,400, sold for £2,400.

Whoops, I blame my tiredness for posting that wink

This one, if it can be negotiated to within budget, is much better.

For those that don't know, The 528i Sports in Manual with cream leather interior and Ac schnitzer styling was a limited edition run out model of the superb e39 5 series by BMW. They are all sport editions and came in the Biaritz Blue, with a contrasting cream leather interior with the walnut pack, They were fully loaded with body kit, sports suspension, Ac Schnitzer carbon mirrors, M Sport wheels and steering wheel, Cruise Control, sunroof, rain sensors
Where did he get that from? How is a 1999 car, produced almost 4 years before the last E39 was sold, a 'run out' model? There was an entire facelift to come before the E39 was to 'run out' when that car was sold new. And there was never a factory E39 with ACS carbon mirrors as standard.

It's just a standard 528i Sport with an interesting interior colour.

You make a good point hehe Perhaps it's the well known run-out prior to the facelift.

No. Mum runs a 528i I had a 728i. I seriously believe you get a better car for less money and the servicing costs are on a par. Wait until a 'one old man owner from new' comes up like I did.

Why would they be any different? It's the same engine?

I also bought an E38 as they were - car for car - cheaper than E39s. She's big though - I've seen you pedal your E21 round the black mountains Ross - you won't be doing that in a 7!
