Would this be an improvement.....

....over the K&N filter I have fitted at the moment on a mildly tuned Essex ?
clicky
Car doesn't sound "good", lot of induction noise and whirring noise (water pump and alternator are ok), could that be the metal timing gear, is that why Ford used fibre? And exhaust is bit too quiet, no nice V6 burble like I get from my S.
Hoping to hear a few others this Sunday at Newark to compare.

Probably a marginal improvement. clicky

Mike, did you speak to JW re the spec of the engine ...as I am pretty sure that on this car that this would of involved the carb internal bores and butterflies. IF you still running auto choke with the little filters then be aware of that carb icing MIGHT bring the choke back on.

I did and yes, he did say the carb had been "tweaked"Adrian@
Still on auto-choke, weren't there conversion kits to go back to manual choke available back when these were modern? Still available?
Going back to the noise thing, just doesn't sound good (unlike a pair of side draught Webers), thought the foam may be a more effective silencer without reverting to the restrictive original "frying pan" air filter?
It would of left me with a std air box and K&N inside (so as to use all the auto choke correctly)....I have manual choke kits, the manifolds 'kit' that never got fitted to the car is something you should call across and see, as it would be a nice project for you to get you teeth into over the winter.

The ITG will be fine unless it is touching the sound insulation on the back of the bonnet, in which case you will be impeding airflow. On my modified Essex I had a custom K&N filter. This was made for me by a man at K&N who calculated that it would breathe up to 235bhp. I supplied top and bottom plates to his dimensions and he made a filter with extra deep vanes to give the required surface area. This way we could have a good breathing filter that would fit comfortably under the bonnet. Cost me about £40, nearly 20 years ago!!
