My sons Metro has broken down so is there a way to get him insured on my Abarth 500 for a few months ?
I currently have a trade policy with Tradex that is due to expire in December so is there a chance I could get him on for a couple of months.
He is 18 and has been driving for 3 months.

Any ideas will be gratefully received.

I should think a new metro will be cheaper.

A cheap £1000 banger will be much cheaper than insuring him on a trade policy at 18'.

Also much less risk of blowing your own no claims with an 18 yr old in a hot hatch!

Get him another metro, i would wait until he was 20 with at least 1 year ncb before putting him near anything remotely fast!

Thats coming from a metro enthusiast, the only thing they do fast as standard is rust!

I forget the insurance company my dad is with but we have a multicar policy with them, and I've been insured for 21 days at a time (and there's a limit each year something like 30 days) on my dads Abarth 500 and defender 90. It wasn't even expensive something like £40. Best bet is just to ring the company and see if they can help.

For reference I am 20 now but I've been insured under this policy in the past. The fact he hasn't even got 1 years no claims might make it difficult....

I wouldn't send any child of mine out on the road in Metro - the darned thing was designed and engineered more than 30 years ago.

Can't see you'll be covering him on the Fiat anytime soon though. Although a Panda could be a good option.

Can't say that would concern me, they were driven by 18 year olds back then too. I drove a 1983 Mini that was designed in the 50s when I was 17 and am still alive.

Nothing wrong with them, see my readers ride topic! Just need to remember that they were designed originally 30 years ago and that they dont have any form of safety until the 100 which gained strengthened doors and some models got an airbag(my guess is it was for show more than anything...)

My son ain't a boy racer and would absolutely refuse to drive something like a corsa. Mind you what with him being a VW apprentice he is considering getting an early Polo bread van.

This is just a stop gap for a couple of months whilst he gets things sorted although his mate has just bought a mint Maestro 1.3 so that could be an option - see what I mean about no being a boy racer !

Why? Not all 17 year olds are. Most, maybe, but by no means all...

I'd venture he'll know better than you what his son is.

And as for the 'he WILL crash it'. I was lucky enough to very often be driving an e46 318 and e92 325 at 19, and never once crashed them. Amazing, eh? Rear wheel drive, all weather conditions, night, whatever. rolleyes

Everyone seems to think no young driver can drive. I managed to use a Range Rover Vogue just fine at 18 and a modded Golf GTi (MK4 frown) but was still around 220BHP. Last year I drove a 300C SRT-8, in the wet... I was 19.

To the OP. It would probably be cheaper to get another snotter that he can flog when he no longer needs it. My cousin bought a Rover 25 for £750 last year, put 25K miles on it and sold it for a grand. That might be an option.

It's a terrible state of affairs when people get comedy quotes on an Abarth. I'm sure it's a lovely car and all, but rapid it surely isn't!

I agree, as an experiment I stuck a fictitious 18YO male on my policy to see how bad it would go, couldn't get anything under £10,000 hehe

I'm not exactly in the space shuttle either.

I would hope so too. I also know what I was like at 18 yo and it wasn't the picture my parents were painted. When I was 18 I had a 205 GTI. I told my parents I drove it like a nun.
