Thanks Steve - more than I can read in one go there!
There's even a post which answers my Q exactly: surprisingly the only units fully compatible are the SB600 and SB800. The SB50 only works in manual mode with the D70, boo.
One for the Christmas list I think!
Steve - as an experienced Nikonite, is i-TTL a very useful feature to have?

The TTL metering is useful but I would say it is a nice to not a need to.
Essentially using the TTL facility the flashgun does all the calculations in its 'brain'with regard amount of flash required depending on the subject distance, and the various camera/lens settings you are using.
You can do all of that manually in setting the gun up.
I rarely do flash work but bought the SB800 recently and seems to do the trick pretty well (not using half the features on it)
