Is there more to life than huge dollops of torque delivered by multi turbo oil burners?
I really hope so

I did a search for more about this and it suggests that the CO2 emissions are 165g/km. Which sounds pretty good (almost suspiciously so if you ask me). And the 0-60 time is 5.2 seconds. Which also sounds pretty good. I would very much like to have a go in one of these things; I bet it accelerates with some vigour.

(As for whether there is more to life than torquey tractorthings, there was a story about the new M5 on the front page the other day - http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyI... - suggesting that even if you restrict yourself just to BMW cars the answer is: yes.)

I wonder is Alpina have made the F10 nicer to drive?
I think it's the dullest BMW in years.

Hello Gizlaroc (navigon sat nav ring any bells) laugh

The thing is am I getting a bit of a woos.

Bearing in mind when I was younger I used to throw around large Mercedes vans.

I sat in a new 5 series.Flip me it was big. Not only that I dont think I could see the boot or bonnet.

Plus the door panels are so high, even at 6ft tall I felt very enclosed.

I honestly wondered how I could drive this thing around Greater London plus multi storeys, supermarket carparks, even street parking.

Anyone driven one? Whats it like.

As for this Alpina ,Id take a B3s(400 bhp and 400lb ,luverlee!!) and keep the rest of the money saved on the Petrol!!!

We had an F11 for about 10 weeks, really didn't like it at all.
I say we as the old man bought it to replace his 2007 730d sport, he couldn't get into it at all so I said I would have it, however, after a week I realised what he was talking about and so traded it in.
Luckily the touring was in big demand so we didn't get too clobbered financially.

Hi gizlaroc,

I haven't had any chances to drive an F10/11 and I can only go on other's views and experiences etc. Your's is the first feedback to the extent of really not liking the car and in the space of a week, have got rid of it. Usually, i'd think that was an indication the car is 'really' crap ! as in, zero feel, dangerous non performing brakes, body wobbles and bits falling off etc.

Could I ask exactly why you didn't get on with it? I can't imagine it's any of the above, so I'm thinking along the lines of you found it boring or bland? too quiet? not enough visibility etc ?!

Cheers, Dennis!

Had it for 11 weeks, my old man decided after 8 weeks of trying to convince himself it was a really good car that he couldn't and said he would get rid of it.
So I thought I would sell my W211 E Class estate and have his F11 touring.
I had driven it a fair bit already and apart from the dismal boot size thought it was alright, it was smooth, more comfy than the 535d E61 I had, and the new gearbox was great, it never felt slow being a 520d and would return 41mpg round town and 50mog on a run, which I think is amazing.

However, once I had lived with it for a few days I started to realise that it was missing something, it did every thing well, but didn't excite in any way whatsoever. Thought it may have been the 4cyl engine or the lack of adaptive suspension, however, we borrowed a 530d sport touring with the adaptive set up for 2 days and that was just more of the same.

It just left us both cold. Talking to the sales guy who I know well he said he had a few owners saying the same thing, technically brilliant but soulless, and that is the best way I can describe it.

So in the end I kept my Merc and he looked at all sorts, from an E350 Coupe, to X5, new 730d and the 530d GT.
Out of all those it came down to the 730d vs 530d GT, and purely on the fact he had just spent 5 years in a 730d and fancied a change he went with the GT.
It is all black and looks pretty funky, I know it is not everyones cup of tea but as a car it is and immense package.
Oh, and the 10 plate 530d GT cost the same as the 60 plate 520d touring.

I know of a couple of people who have now moved their new 5 series on and now it has gone they are saying although it was a great car, they never really fell in love with it. I think a lot of people make themselves love something they have just dropped £40k on, or something they know they are going to be into for the next 3 years.

Hi

I had a suspicion it'd be something along those lines - in that the newer car just doesn't 'evoke' the same sort of feeling as perhaps previous 5 series. I think you may have something in the fact it is the entry level 520d so perhaps the performance aspect isn't matching the car's pedigree. It's the same with the E60 520d and the e39 520i's great 'economy' biased examples of the generation, but that's about it. I'd hazard a guess a 525d or i would be ones that will indeed be capable of stirring up the usual higher levels of praise for the 5 series cars. I know it does vary from person to person as well, there's probably many others who are really happy with the car for instance too.

For me, half dreaming, I'd like to go for an F11 Sport 530d/535d (still not sure of the exact lineup!) and of course, I'd modify it the way I'd want which for me always enhances a good base car to the levels I find exciting.

Back on topic as well, I'm sure the Alpina will be a phenomenal performer for what it is, this generation of super Diesel cars has really taken it to the next level with those performance figures to match the economy figures. Of course, like anything, when it's new and cutting edge it's going to be expensive and in this example, there's also the exclusive Alpina levels of pricing etc for the whole package as well.

There can't be 'that' many companies out there doing so exceptionally well to have one of these D5 Bi-Turbo's as their MD's company car, no doubt a few well heeled customers will give them homes, but I wonder if those who are in the market, be it company cars or private, for an F10 M5 could be swayed to this Alpina or the rumoured F10 M Diesel ?!

Cheers, Dennis!

We thought it was the fact it was a 520d, so looked at swapping for a 530d, however the dealer wasn't sure that it was just the engine so lent us a 530d for 2 days, and he was right, just as soulless.

Hence why we starting looking at completely different models.

I think the problem may be that we have both owned Mercs, and it is almost like BMW are trying to make the 5 series more mainstream, and dare I say it more Merc like, by that I mean in the comfort factor and feeling big and special, rather than it being edgy and sporty and quite small for its actual size.
Problem with this is if I want that I will stick with Mercedes as they do the Mercedes thing much better, being Mercedes and all. haha

But it will probably work for them as on the Merc forum a few Merc owners are now considering a 5 series for the first time ever, so we shall see.
I just feel that BMW have come to the end of an era, and I think they need to be careful, there used to be a real reason to buy a BMW, it was so much better dynamically than everything else in the category that you lived with the slightly raw nature and firm ride, but they are getting to be like too many other cars these days, they may bring new customers over now, but will those same people stick with BMW or will they move onto the next thing when they buy next time round?

I remember buying an E46 after 7 Audis, then when I swapped I went back to Audi, didn't like the car I bought so bought a different Audi, didn't like that so went through around 5 Audis in 2 years, then it hit me, it was the fact it wasn't a BMW. I went and bought another BMW and clicked with it straight away, it was in a different league to the Audi to drive. As much as I loved the Audis design wise etc. I had to have BMWs from then on, despite the badge.

All that changed for me with the new 5 series, I just feel BMW have sold themselves out, and after many years and over a dozen BMWs they are no longer a must have, they are simply another brand on the list of maybes next time round.
