I'm looking at getting an estate, I love driving but have a motorbike now which I use mostly for commuting so I need something for getting me to work on bad days, hauling stuff around and the odd long journey, hopefully less than 6000 miles a year.
I've whittled it down to either a 530d touring sport auto or a vw passat highline 2.0 DSG.
I'm a bit worried about huge bills on the BMW but think the VW will be a bit dull.
I don't really want to spend more than £6k.

Anyone got any thoughts?

If you're only planning to do 3000 miles a year, does the mpg matter? On the used market, the petrol model is often cheaper to buy than the diesel equivalent.

What age? If you're only doing 3000 miles a year, you may run into problems with the particulate filter. For that mileage, you're better off with a petrol engine.

Forget diesels for that mileage, get a 550i or similar.

I guess thinking about it, it will be more like 6000 miles. I used to do 3000 miles in my TVR.
I do plan to keep it for a long time too.

Buy a petrol Five for that annual mileage. The premium you'll pay for the diesel engine won't be recouped by the extra fuel economy.

3 years and 9,000 miles at 35mpg and £1.50/litre: £1,754
3 years and 9,000 miles at 25mpg and £1.45/litre: £2,374

£620 "saved" by buying the diesel. Which at the same age, spec miles and condition will carry a premium nearer to £1,000 (or for the same purchase price will be older and/or have more miles) without potentially factoring a bill for a reconditioned turbo or replacement injectors on the diesel, which will be dearer than a new water pump on a 525i/530i.

Other Five Series weak points will be common to both.

fair points about petrol variants. Everyone seems to be talking about the BMW, no votes for the Passat then?
I quiet like the idea of a DSG box, but hear good things about the BMW autos too.

Remember that big BMW diesels areactually pretty poor on economy as well on short distances.

528i or similar will be perfect

Based on the fuel gauge and range readout, that's not significantly worse than my 525... scratchchin

Whichever you buy, I'd look to buy something with higher than average mileage and pay less than book to get it due to that. When you come to sell it, your low annual mileage will have evened it's total out and you should score.

525i over the diesel. Cheap used buy as no one wants them and still fairly frugal.

DSG is a bit marmite - you'd need to have a go to work out if you like it or not, it certainly wasn't for me! Proper auto in the BMW is a better compromise and suits the engine very well especially for motorway/a-road work. The BMW is also a bit more interesting than the Passat, though I always found my Mum's Passat OK to drive... 50mpg easily on a run while laden to the gills with 4 + luggage with the air con on and cruise set just below 80.

That's the kinda thinking I want to see hehe

To be fair, if it's accurate, it's not any worse than my Audi. Bugger. Supposedly can get 25-28mpg from these in average use..

Pay peanuts for an 'undesirable' 528i or 530i, you'll get 30ish mpg and be a happier for it.
Diesels are for people doing 10k a year plus.

I got 23mpg in my E39 Touring auto. You'll only crack 30mpg if you are doing long runs.

I also had an e39 540 touring for a while - monster engine but it certainly does numb the front end compared to the i6 versions.

I actually swapped my 528 for a passat with SilverbackMike off here. It was a 54 plate 130 "sport" manual. Apart from getting 45mpg+ it was sheet.

What budget are we talking anyway. E39 or E61?

You lot really do make me laugh. I know we all love the big petrol engines but trying to make out it will save him money is stupid. It will loose thousands in comparison the diesel, which obviously will be worth more and easier to sell when it comes to it so the more money on the ential outlay, will not be lost.

He might be doing 3000-6000 a year, but whats to say thats short journeys?

He might do 200 miles in one journey, a couple of times a month and it sits there for the rest of the time?

Buy cheap, sell cheap, no?
