Seems DD is on the increase...something to do with reliance on Scameras and no traffic cops maybe?

Particularly 'like' the bit - "the force has now urged the public to inform them of any information about drink-drivers" - so now there's no trafpol we (the persecuted) should play Bib - I think not.

bring back 'proper' policing

Drink-driving is 'out of control'

A rise in drink-drive offences has left one police force worried
A senior police officer has warned the drink-drive problems in his force area are "spiralling out of control".
Superintendent Peter Clark's comments came after Grampian Police caught 21 drivers over the limit last weekend.

The worst case was that of someone who was three-and-a-half times over the legal limit to drive.

Supt Clark said: "What is particularly worrying is that of the 21 drivers caught this weekend, 11 were young drivers aged between 19 and 25 years."

The force has now urged the public to inform them of any information about drink-drivers.

Public help

Supt Clark: "Make no mistake, if those who continue to drink and drive think they will never get caught I can point them in the direction of 21 people who had the same idea this last weekend and were proved otherwise.

"We will continue to target known offenders with every available resource," he said.

"Our best weapon is information and I urge members of the public to continue reporting these individuals who put themselves and others at risk."

He said catching drink-drivers was a priority for his officers.

The number of drink-drivers caught in Scotland over Christmas 2003 rose despite the annual police crackdown.

A total of 770 drivers were charged, compared with 750 the previous year.

One driver was arrested every hour during the four-week campaign and the number of women caught increased by almost a third.

Actually.....

in the press and journal article on the SECOND paragraph they give the big lie away by saying (and i quote directly from the paper in my hand)

Grampian Superintendant peter clark................................bla bla bla..................who were over the limit or unfit to drive through DRINK OR DRUGS.

Now obviously I do not condone either drink or drug (??) driving BUT once again we have a sweeping police statement that does NOT hold up to the evidence provided.

"Police? I have just seen someone who is driving drunk"

The thing is, you could replace "drink driving" with "speeding" in the article and most people would agree. Perhaps we really are reaching the point where "speeding is as antisocial as drink driving" as the police promised us.

I like that lateral thinking Peter.

So old Blunderbus is actually doing his job as he has everybody on about speeding........

i've noticed that a lot of drivers now brake well before a reduced speed limit and then proceed at 10 miles an hour under the speed limit
Had a nice chap flash me furiously on the motoerway (M27) in a daewoooooooo because I had overtaken him I must have been doing all of 80 mind you he was in the middle lane with nothing for miles on his left.

Appalling as it may sound, now that there are next to no TC's out there, I have been known to "drink up to the limit" and drive home. I know I am not over the limit because of a breath test machine, however it probably isn't the best thing in the world to do. Would never have dreamt of doing this 5 years ago, but camera spotting is easy, and all you need do it 5mph less than the limit and no hassle........
Condemn if you like, but I'm only doing what the law permits.
Am I more dangerous than when I am sober, and "speeding" by a heinous 5mph?? definately. But Brunstromia rules say that only speeding is bad, so **** it, I'll have one for the road anyway.

Hertsbiker,I know where you are coming from, but I drive a golf and have sometimes had 2pints ( used to D& D a lot but no more ) but I would never ever D & D on my bike ( blade ).
You must realise ( I know you do ) that riding a bike takes a lot more "road awareness" than driving a car.
Please dont continue this as it gives us bikers a bad name, and this year with all the focus it is bad enough already.

RoSPA Official Statistcs 2002 clearly state that more people died through medical misadventure than through drink driving.

Right chaps, at all costs, demonise the motorist any way you can.

Treat all motoring articles from non motoring sources with utter contempt whatever the content.

that is interesting about having a drink before driving. I, as well as numbers of my colleagues, have a quick pint before driving home these days, and why not. The scamera van on the way out of Hull aint going to pull you up, and now only catches visitors to "The Deep" who don't know it's there.
As said, a few years ago I wouldn't have dreamt of drinking before driving home, but why not!
I shocked to think that I think that way now by the way!

I think DD could wel be on the increase. I've just got up from working a night in Southampton Central Custody Suite (not my usual manor). We had 3 DDs through the door in one shift. All of them at least twice the limit. All ages too, girlie early 20s, and two older blokes.

I have to wonder what you have to do to get through to people.

Incidentally. I spent a rare shift out on foot patrol a couple of evenings ago.

Supposed to high visibility patrols - dealing with anti-social types. However, I stopped just the one car (Golf Gti: front fogs on - scrotey looking). No insurance. The classic line... "I've just bawt it.... and I'm drivin' it 'ome. I only lives raaand the cawna!"

Local TV news just did a feature on DD increases in Derbyshire. Drinkers know the cameras dont have Breathalysers, and the cameras dont care if someone is pissed as long as they are weaving all over the road under the speed limit.

Is alcohol poisoning classed as medical misaventure ??

I'm not one to preach about drink driving - being ex-Navy.. Been there & survived.
My other half has never let me forget the time I woke up at home, not knowing how I got there - and car parked neatly in driveway. Having had an afternoon session on "Moose Milk"...
As it turns out, I'd realised I was incapable, phoned home and SWMBO got a friend to come & collect me and the car.
But the fear factor remained, it would have been so easy to climb into the car and probably kill someone..
After that event, I frightened myself so much that even now (8 yrs later) I'll not have more than 1 pint during the course of an evening out (IF it's my turn to drive..)
If I'm not driving - it's a different ballgame...
