I'm in the process of installing the Mod-Wise aerial amplifier but am really stuck as to how to remove the radio unit itself in order to access the rear. What is the correct way to do this ?

I've never removed one before so is there a standard removeal method for all makes or does it vary ?

You usually have to slide a thin metal doofer down the slots either side of the stereo to push in a rachet that would otherwise be sticking out and stopping the stereo from emerging from the hole. Bit like opening a door by sliding a credit card into the yale lock. The doofers are just cheapo bits of bent steel or aluminium. A car stero shop will probably give you a couple for free if you ask.

Handy tip...

Use an old credit card or similar plastic and simply cut two strips of about the same width as the slots on either side of the radio (about 1cm wide).

Keep trimming one edge at a very slight angle untill it works. Reaquires a bit of patience

If you have a pioneer head unit then you either need two medium sized flat head screwdrivers or two pioneer stereo keys, If you are using the first option then place the screwdrivers, one each side in the middle carefully down the side of the stereo, you should now be able to ease the stereo out as you have pushed the two securing pins out the way, the cage that holds the stereo in place has two little arms that push into the sides of the stereo and hold it in place the screwdrivers will push them outwards thus releasing the stereo. If you are near a stereo shop you could pop in and they should give you the pioneer keys, they should have several about, these again just go down the sides until you hear them click, you can now just pull the stereo out with them.
Hope this helps, sorry for the length!!!

P.S. you need to remove the outer surround on the stereo to access the two little slots at the side, this should just pop off.

The proper keys make the job a lot easier, any hi-fi shop should have them, even Halfords I should think. They'll be pennies.

Or grab a yoof off the closest street corner, they'll have it out in seconds.
