I quite fancy something like this to do up for next year.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3195371.htm

I've had experience of this engine in my old Corolla GT Twin Cam and found these things to be reliable and a damn good engine for a four pot.

Otherwise I haven't got much experience of the original MR2. I just want something fun, cheap and useable for some welcome relief from my diesel barge!

What should I look out for with these little MR2's apart from obvious rust? Are spares readily available?

Any advice appreciated smile

These are great, I had a late MK1 it is the only cat I have regretted selling to date. Mine was utterly reliable I sold it with 130k on it and still smooth, I remember it had a slightly weak synchromesh when selecting 2nd gear, but other than that no probs, I used to need new tyres about every 10-12k miles on the rear which was a pain as I was doing about 2k a month in it at the time/

Ive had an MX5 too, the mr2 was much better built and probably more of an event to drive, but the mid rear set up is a little less forgiving of hamfisted driving, the grip is impressive but it can let go

I think it would be a good choice to get an MR2 as they are not the usual choice, not many about, reliable, mid engined, rewarding and fun to drive.

But the MR2 isn't that much better than an MX5 it's just a different drivetrain layout which some may or may not find better suited to what they want as a driving experience.

Great cars. Buy one with refreshed brakes and suspension as then the driving experience will be what it should be.

That's unlikely considering how the MR2's rust wink

Great cars - I went for an MX5 instead in the interest of sideways antics but having driven both I couldn't say one was better than the other, just different.

Exactly, I've been out in a few of my colleagues MX5's and I can see they are good cars but they don't "do it" for me yikes

The little MR2 has more appeal because it's a bit more different, and not a bad steer from what I'm led to believe. smile

BMW X5 M? Naah they're awful. Massive body roll and terrible ride. ;-)

You'll need new tennis shorts to go with the car, Brock.

Touche!

For the record, I had an MR2 and loved it. It was pink - once red. And I got every single tennis coach gag going...
