We are coming up to North Yorkshire for a long weekend in October and, as it is my first time, want to stay in nice quaint hotels with great driving roads to play with...... any ideas, we're staying the first night in the Black Horse at Clifton as the 355 is being detailed in Brighouse, then planning to head towards Whitby and surrounding area.

Why on earth is James coming all the way to Brighouse to get his car cleaned! hehe

Yes, I can think of loads Nikkie but

this one

would fit the bill perfectly. And Pickering is but an exhilarating short drive from Whitby, oh, via the NY Moors smile

Is this to tie in with Malton by any chance? If so I might have an early morning idea for you and James wink

I'm having Tony Spears detail her for James' birthday pressie this year, and it ties in with a visit to see Russ at Revolution Porsche and see his new baby (Emily), James is a Yorkshireman and wants to show me his amazing home county. I've looked at Pickering as I want to eat at the "Star" and I need to see "Robin Hood's bay", only having a long weekend means will will have to come up again and will try to tie in the next one with a breakfast although we are going to pop in and see mark whilst up.
Dinner on the 7th Oct is at "The Black horse" if anyone is up for a beer or a bite.

Thanks for the link.

Quick update: It seems that James has been persuaded that we need to come to Yorkshire not once but twice in October, we shall most probably be up for the Malton Breakfast but in the VXR8 rather than the 355 I am sure JP will still be happy to participate in whatever early morning antics you have in mind Al (unless I can come up with a more attractive idea wink

Robin Hood's Bay is lovely and there are a few really nice little guest houses down near the beach. Runswick Bay just up the road is also lovely.

If you haven't booked The Star, get in booked, quick!

Guisborough Hall Hotel is recommended by a good mate (GaryW on here) who took the PCGB's 997TT register there recently for a driving weekend. On the door step best roads in Yorkshire too!

I personally love Middlethorpe Hall in York and the food is excellent too IMHO.

Star at Harome might be booked up, as Al says, but is ace, esp the 'signature' starter. The Star at North Dalton is also Michelin starred and is also on a nice route but a bit more out in the sticks!

It'd be good to have another thundering VXR with us on the run out before the Malton meet too, but not sure if it's got the legs to keep up Al wink

Got it in one, Took the 997 on a 'baptisimal' tour of Umbria & Tuscany last year and cut through from Monte Carlo Luccese to Maranello on the way home to Parma, the bridge was just too good to miss.
The amazing roads that I had on my doorstep are one of the things I miss most now I'm back in Blighty but we're taking the 355 down to Florence next year so I may have a photo of her there to post!
(note to self: update profile pic to present car)

Nikkie - if you have some "must stay places" or "must do" roads between France and Italy I would love to know. I have already picked Stu's brain smile

You and James aren't down with us and the RWR crowd for the Le Mans Classic are you? Louise and I are driving down after the Classic to Monte Carlo for a couple of nights (via "that" bridge) then over the southern Alps into Italy for a week. It would be cool if you and James just happened to be doing the same thing!

See you at Black Tie and Pie?

In orde.........,if you fancy the Umbria /Tuscany type tour check out my FB photo albums of last years trips, I like stopping where I am at 6pm and finding an agriturism locally, there are a few great books with lists and reviews that I used to keep in the car but seem to have been removed by the ex from my boxes when they arrived. (and I must get back to finishing the blog for restaurants etc.)
We are doing the Classic, but JP's sister Alison wants to come back through Brittany and as we are heading to Florence at some point in the Summer it may come down to diplomatic negotiations. Personally the MC, Millau and Ligurian tunnel run are far more up my street.(gives me a chance to check in on my chef in MC)
BTaP is a definate, but we'll see you at Malton anyhow.I believe HWSBO has already sorted accomodation in the area whilst on MegaHoon.

Well, if you don't want to get up early, let us know where you are staying as we may well be passing on the run in to Malton smile

If you're talking about the Star at Harome, I wasn't all that impressed to be honest. I found it a bit too rich and not enough flavour. They use fantastic quality ingrediants and then mask all their flavours, a litle simplification and then it would be great. So I wasn't surprised they lost the michelin star.

Having said all that, others love it so what do I know getmecoat

The problem is that I am used to working with starred chefs in italy so would be quite upset if the meal isn't up to expectations, can you recommend anywhere else locally that could be worth a try, being that close to Whitby and not eating seafood seems sacriligious, so pointers in the correct direction would be appreciated.

I wouldn't dismiss The Star at Harome just on one bad report Nikkie... many hundreds rate it very very highly, including StuB, and he likes his food and wine (and Italy) wink

Has anyone eaten/stayed at Estbek House? website looks lovely but if there's feedback prior to booking it would be appreciated.

Very good apparently, excellent food.

Dunsley Hall is close by too.

I can personally vouch that Estbeck House is very well worth a visit because the food is fantastic. Tim and Dave also have great rooms there if you can get in.

You could also try Raithwaite Hall (http://www.raithwaitehallwhitby.co.uk/) if its actually open by then but its probably not going to be that Quaint...
