Brick is stronger but pita to drill. If youre going in far enough youll get awy with drilling mortar and rawlplugging. Only if the mortar is healthy tho!

Why is brick a problem to drill into? Only if you are using an egg whisk. Mtfu and buy a decent drill

This. You can get a decent mains corded SDS drill for less than £100.

£8.99 will get you a decent drill bit.

Drilling into the brick would provide the better fix. If you ever need to remove the shelf and make good, it would be easier to make goodthe motor joint than the brick.

Depends on application.

Only if it's a battery one! SDS if you're having a hard time.

Sure do. An SDS jobbie is rather overkill for a 5mm hole.

being in the building trade i only ever use an sds drill.percussion drills are ok but take too long and make far too much noise.use an sds drill into the brick with a 7mm bit and use brown plugs.fix the shelf up with some 3inch 8s or 10s.
if you do all that the shelf will be good forever.hope that helps

Get a cheap corded hammer drill - £20? Drill into the brick and stop being a wuss. One day you'll foget it's a crap shelf and put something too heavy on it giving yourself a nice repair job that will cost more than £20.

Any job like this is an EXCUSE to buy a new power tool - mtfu - as mentioned.
