S1 can't get gears.. help!
Discussion
Morning all,
The S1 has been running well for a while now however after my dad taking it for a couple of days he has sent me the following;
"Yesterday when after starting the TVR I could not get any gears, but after some pumping, messing around, I got into gear and went for a short ride. Later in the day I started the car again, but this time could not get into gear at all!"
Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be the problem? There is no loss of clutch fluid or pedal pressure.
Thanks,
Adrian

Definately no fluid loss? that, I would have said, is by far the commonest cause of your problem?
lay on the floor sort of alongside the drivers side sill and, while someone presses the clutch pedal,you should be able to reach under and feel (maybe even see) if the clutch arm is moving ?

Could be master cylinder seals? Plunger moving but seals not developing MC pressure?
Presumably it will go into gear without the engine running?
If you go for the land rover hydraulic parts they are so cheap its not worth messing about - just replace both master and slave cylinders. Slave is a bit of a bugger to get at though.

Hi,
Mine did something similar conveniently the day on which I was about to set off for Scotland
. My fluid was a little low but not excessively so, but it turned out some air had managed to get into the pipe. Not entirely sure how but its not beyond the realms of possibility that yours could have done something similar?
Up on ramps, quickly bled the clutch to push out any air (I went underneath to do the dirty work and DocBob kept the reserviour topped up and pumped the pedal).
An hour later we were on the move, and even just about made it in time for the lunch stop!
No problems since.
Hope yours is as easy!

Not sure if this is possible on the S but I once had a car that the clutch started being really strange - I eventually found the reason was that the actuation arm was wearing through and all the cylinder was doing was deforming it rather than actuating the clutch - could that be something to do with it - I'm not sure what sort of lever mechanism the S clutch has??

Jimed think this what you mean see the link below. The slave pushrod after time wears into the clutch fork

My advice with the whole clutch issue would be to work backwards remake the push rod with weld change the slave for a new one.
Replace the rigid clutch pipe( mine every now and then would just dump the fluid out as the fittings were worn and the pipe had been shortened) with a flexi SS hose.
Then change the master cylinder all IMHO of course.
Good luck

Jack up the car, find friend, get them to presss the pedal. If the slave is moving in and out by more than an inch or so, then possibly a clutch problem. But I very much doubt it, if new clutch required this would have been more progressive. Still to check though;
Are you sure the system is properly bled following the change of master cylinder?
Is there any dirt in the fluid or is it clear? if dirty that's a guarantee to be the slave cylinder.
If slave actuates as above, then prop the pedal down and leave for an hour or so. If it returns while pedal is still down, then slave is leaking and needs replacing.
