I think I have been flashed by a Gatso going towards it! I thought Gatso's only trapped you from behind - in a manner of speaking. Has anyone any thoughts or advice?

So long as it's not a Truvelo (which are often blue, forward-facing and do NOT flash) you are fine.

I frequently see the Gatsos on the way into Brighton being triggered by oncoming traffic (and may have done it myself, on occasion). They can't touch you as they are set up the opposite carriageway only (marker lines etc.) There are some standard Gatsos which can sit on the central reservation and be switched to either direction, but they need to photograph you moving away. There are also some particularly degenerate versions which are double sided! Evil, evil things.

Keep using that expensive film up, so long as it flashes you as you approach!

This usually means that there's no camera in the box - only a dummy flash unit. I've never heard of a single prosecution from a Gatso snapping at oncoming traffic.

I recommend that you complain to the local Police because it's bloody dangerous to have a flash going off in your face when you're driving - especially at night.

Can anyone think of a law that might be breached by the installer of a dummy camera flash who KNOWS that it's going to flash in oncoming drivers' faces from time to time?

1361 Justice of the Peace Act ...words and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace... ie flashing in someones face for no good reason is likely to provoke them into doing something against the peace.

I have heard this before, but the truvelos in Portsmouth definitely DO flash. Maybe the designers altered it otherwise it would be too sneaky: I guess that you could conceivably be caught every day in one week and get banned before you even get your first NIP.

The flash is supposed to be covered with a magenta filter, and the film in use is supposed to sensitive at the infra red end of the spectrum. The filter is in the type approval conditions. The Home Office decided that with the filter the flash wasn't too bright. Maybe they weren't too bright instead because I get a constant trickle of complaints about truevelo flashes.

Has anyone here been temporarily blinded by a Truvelo flash?
