I asked this a while back but don't think I got an answer so hope you guys don't mind if I ask again...
My oil tank has no sight gauge, so difficult to check the oil level (has a mesh inside), so does anyone know where I might source the right fittings to make up and add a sight gauge?
cheers

My tank was supplied a while ago with the engine and all the bits from JS, so no.
The mesh is about 3/4 the way up the tank, and after adding the recommended amount of oil, it is way down the tank from what I can see. I would be very worried about adding a lot more, as I have no idea on the impact on the engine...overfill?

Tricky one. We find that the oil level does drop considerably if the engine has been stood for a while - I would *guess* that the oil makes its way into the sump, and then when the engine is started, the scavenge pump kicks in and pumps it back into the tank, raising the level. It might be worth a check if this is the case on yours.
Most dry sump tanks have an overflow pipe, so the oil will just blow out if it is overfilled (assuming its dry sumped)

OK, so If no sight gauge, then you have to rely on totally emptying the oil from the system every time to see what you have, or what you use, which sounds a bit rediculous???
Must be a better way that that?
That is why I would have thought the site gauge would be good, then no-matter how high or low you have fitted the LS7 tank, you just fill with the prescribed amount (bit more if you have a cooler), mark on the gauge at rest with the engine off, and maybe a hot and cold reading as well...then monitor - easy?
So...where can I get a gauge from? I can get the appropriate female fittings welded to the tank, but so far I can't see anything suitable. Surely they are available from somewhere.. via the net?

i have a factory dry sump tank for my factory sbc car.. it has a tube on the side to use to see oil level. I have to change the tube every couple of years as the dirty oil stains the tube.
Oil level on dry sump cars should only be checked while running or once warm, shut off and checked straight away. never check when cold or when engine been turned off for a while as oil will with gravity run out of the tank back to the pump and back into the engine. That check will be inaccurate.
My oil level is normally half way on the sight tube when running.

Hi Keith,
Do you run the Ultima dry sump tank? If so, the idea is that the oil level is just above the mesh - so inherently if you can see the mesh you need to put some more in.

I have factory dry sump set up on my LS7 - advice was to have hot oil level (check within 5 mins of stopping engine)Do you run the Ultima dry sump tank? If so, the idea is that the oil level is just above the mesh - so inherently if you can see the mesh you need to put some more in.

below the mesh (about an inch if I remember correctly - I have it written down somewhere - Made a wire with markings that I just drop in and measure from the cap so I can track where my level is.
I'd recommend you call the factory to be safe, but sure.
Well, for the first time I have managed to run my engine up to temperature, and check to see the fans kick in - brilliant!
..and on stopping I took a peek into the oil tank to see the oil above the mesh! Is that right or OK?
Doesn't it depend on how high or low the tank is?
On idle I see the oil pressure at 56-57 psi HOT - is this as expected?
cheers
