Fired up the Cerb today to give her a good run since last weekend, and as soon as i put my foot on the clutch pedal i knew something was'nt right. Very spongey with lots of play. Cant get it into any gear with the engine on, but when off it goes into all gears fine.

Theres no horrible mess under the car to suggest a fluid leak. Is it the cable? Or something more sinister (and more expensive )?

Your clutch slave or master cylinder seals have gone. If it's the master cylinder then look for fluid in the footwell, the slave cyclinder empties itself into the clutch housing, so you are unlikely to see any fluid.

I'd be willing to bet on it being the slave cylinder seals that need replacing. About a £300 job at topcats.

That's a broken clutch finger problem, different to the slave cylinder...

The RAc are on their way to get mine (CCL's actualy) for a clutch problem. No matter how far I push the clutch down and it goes a long way it will not dissengage. Sounds similar to your problem.....

Bad luck mate.

similar - i seem to have lost a good 2 or 3 inch play on it, and it only seems to start to engage with about an inch left and its not enough to change the gears.

Let me know if the RAC manage to get yours working. I will need to decide whether to try fixing it or just get it on a lowloader to Topcats.

What i can't understand (and i know very little about cars) is how it was working fine last weekend, i had a good drive and then parked her up, no sign of problems, then i get in it five days later and its knackered

Cheers for all the replies guys - guess i am now an official member of the 'Clutch ****** Club'

Trust me, one of your clutch cylinder seals has gone. You might be able to do the master cylinder yourself, but the slave is a real bitch.

I spent a month nursing my car around, refilling the clutch fluid etc... A month of stress wondering if my car would get me anywhere, it's not worth it.

Why not?

The bloke did when mine went, he couldn't fix it as it goes, but at least he had a go.

Seems to me it's easier for them to phone for a low loader than get their hands dirty.

Not really, they get loose a bonus if it goes on a low loader ( extra cost)

Mine went in same way and thought it was the slave cylinder but was wrong as you can see from the pic's but put new slave on anyway.

Clutch fingers is a normal pedal but no gears, cylinders are a spongey pedal with no gears.

I'm still willing to put money on this

So... does this mean you're willing to take a bet against me on Gregs problem being the clutch slave cylinder?

Looks like i've started a bit of a betting frenzy here. I will happily act as bookmaker and any proceeeds won could pay for whatever it is i need doing

Hopefully will get it to Topcats this week so will post the answer as soon as i know.

I had a slave cylinder go..... It was fine, then I had difficulty selecting gears a couple of time, then it went. Clutch pedal went loose, game over.

The bad bit is that there is apparently a shortage of new slave cylinders, so unless it can be repaired (not replaced) it may take a while.

Mines into it's third week off the road... :-(
