slight twist on this one...
the size of my new rims dictates a very narrow choice of tyres. Rimstock (Team Dynamics) advice is to pair my new R9x18 and F8x17 rims to 265-35-18 and 225-45-17 tyres as the closest match to original rolling radius.
I had decided on Toyo R1Rs but not available in sizes....
This leaves me a choice between Falken FK-452s or Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110s
My car is a daily driver, all weathers, road car - maybe a couple of track outings a year, if that. PAS means the quick rack (and mine feels especially edgy turning in for some reason - looking at geo soon)
The car also has all that extra power and torque (est. 400bhp/440ftlbs)
So it's all about grip/traction in all weathers rather than optimum track conditions.
Anyone got real world experience in similar circumstances ?

I would go for R888's if your using it mainly in the summer. I have tried Falkens and Goodyear F1 and they both cant get any traction till 4th in mine, im guessing you will have similar torque.
I changed to R888's and the difference is amazing! There expensive but whats the point in all the power and torque if your sat there spinning!

yes Daz, we've now got to skim the inner rear arches....
just had a long chat with Brian at Camskill - incredibly helpful and first thing he did was ensure that my choices complied with the new regs on load ratings etc.
As the car is daily use, rain or shine (mostly rain then), he steered (sorry !) me away from 888s/R1Rs. Granted, if it was a track/summer use only car, we agreed they would be my choice, but for daily and all weather use he convinced me off them, particularly with the sort of power to weight I'll be enjoying.
so the choice opens up to :
Falken 452 - decent all rounder
Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110 - soft side walls, reputedly
Toyo R1R - soft compound hardens up in cold weather - and expensive
Vredestein Alltrack Sessanta - he really rates these, but poss too sharp on mine (very sharp turn in)
Goodyear Eagle Assymetric 2 - note new improved "2" - poss the best all rounder, not that much dearer
leaning towards the Eagles, need to read up more...

My thoughts exactly, the 255/35/18 is available in the desired R1-R and the ideal rim width according to Toyo is 9".
hmmmm - Rimstock did the calcs and came up with the 265-35. Apparently the originals were 245-45 hence the discrepancy....That's the rear which is relatively straight forward. For the front although Sili's alternative size is better from a rolling dia view his suggested size doesn't appear to be available from anyone as a summer performance tyre :-( Probably the best you can do is stick with the 225/45/17 that Rimstock recommended and if you go with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 you'll have the same tyres all round.
(You could fit the 215/45/17 but you may risk damaging the rim and the ride will be harsher plus - remembering your roundabout incident - will give you less feedback.)
JR said:
Sadly not. Have Rimstock got the 265s in stock but not the 255s? The originals will have been 225/50/16 (628 dia) or as you say 245/45/16 which has a rolling dia of ... 625 so Rimstock would be even further out http://www.toyo.co.uk/tire/pattern/proxes-t1-r

no - rimstock are the wheel manufacturer and have no interest in selling tyres. That's the rear which is relatively straight forward. thanks for the corrections - noted
The R1R was the original preference, but have been warned off its cold weather performance. Probably will be the Eagles, will need to iron out the diameter confusion before order placed

My comment was flippant but that never comes over on the internet. I wish I hadn't bothered, sorry.Jammy Dodger said:

My worry for you is that the fronts may rub depending on your suspension set up and the exact shape that TVR built your car. 205s on the dia that you are proposing would be OK. 225s on a smaller dia would be OK. 225s on the larger dia that you are considering may be OK but you may need to shave/re-shape the fibreglass a little. (You might be able to adjust the suspension to avoid rubbing but then you wouldn't have the optimal set up for performance.)JR said:

my apologies if I appeared curt - was working round the demands of 2 yr old twins expending pent up energy after 2 weeks grounded with chickenpox (them, not me !)you're right - 225 fronts were no problem on the 15s. The car will be setup for optimum performance with safety, not looks, as the ambition - the big wheels are required purely to accommodate the AP6600s. So the inner arches will "see the knife" rather than compromise the geo.
Remain tempted by the R1Rs, but if - as Camskill suggest - they'll struggle to warm up over winter - then I have to accept they're not right for my "catch-all" solution. Even assuming I wanted to spend another £1500 on a second complete set of wheels/tyres (one set summer/one winter) I don't have the secure stroage for a second set. By the time I've worn out the set I'm looking to choose, that may have changed.
"it's never bloody easy" they say
right.....
Rears: from 225-50-16 to 265-35-18 is +1.79% (acceptable)
Front: from 205-55-15 to 225-40-17 is +0.87% (acceptable)
that's working off what I now believe to be the original sizes, although as a later car I think my car had the 245 rears and 225 fronts from new.
so, that's sorted then, except it seems that JR's right - 225-40-17 doesn't appear to be available in my shortlist

I've just been out to the garage to check for you...
Proxes, 265/35 * 18 on the back which needed an arch skim, 215/40 * 17 on the front which doesn't foul anything.
thanks - appreciate it.Proxes, 265/35 * 18 on the back which needed an arch skim, 215/40 * 17 on the front which doesn't foul anything.
Never one to hide my ignorance under a bushel, I will ask openly the pros/cons of a (relatively) narrow vs. fatter front tyre ?
Think you will find the 205/55/15 were for non power steering cars but i fitted them to my car anyway ..
When i changed to 17" on all four corners which i hated because the difference in wall heights (looked club footed)and the harsh ride on the front ,they were 215/40/17.
What ever size you go for try and match the wall heights front to rear.
Im now running 16" front 225/45/16 no rubbing and plenty of wall height which these cars prefer , still think the best wheel combination
Not many of you seem to go for 16"front 17" rear..ive not seen anyone else with this setup.
My rears are 245/40/17..
These sizes are alot cheaper, seems to be lower the profile more expensive they are..

Ok - still stuck between Vredesteins & Eagles...
Is it correct to assume that the narrower the front wheel, the quicker the steering response ?
My concern with 215 is that my turn in is already uncomfortable sharp (realise it can be softened with toe/camber whatever but presumably at the expense of tyre wear).
So.... FRONT 225-45-16 means i keep my fatter (slower steering) fronts, but the 45 profile isn't a great match against the 225-50 originals (+4.67%) - what, if any, problem does this pose - other than again skimming the inner arch ? Rear 265-35-18, skimmed arches, job done

Be careful on tyre choice as widths vary for the same size.
My 255x40x17 rears are actually a tad under 265mm wide across the tread, (triple 8's are always wider then their sizes, something about square shoulders??).
215x45x17 Fronts in Triple 8's come up at 220mm wide.
