Hello everyone, so I'm sure you're all aware a new car between Sept 2011 and March 2012 will be a 62 plate and March 2012 to Sept 2012 will be a 12 plate.

Theoretically, if I ordered a brand new car in January 2012 (technically a 62 plate) but it took 3 months to make/deliver the car, would it be a 12 plate since it was delivered after March 2012?

I guess my question is - at what point in the making of a new car is the number plate generated?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before - I tried searching but it's currently down and the Google search didn't come up with any results.

It's only when the car is registered. If it was delivered in March then it would be a 62 plate.

So they register/generate the number plate at time of ordering then?

No, only when it is delivered to the dealers.

I ordered my Polo in February (59 plate at the time), but it was delivered in June - so it was on an 11 plate.

No, basically when it first goes on the road.

Ah right, that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

Do you actually get any say in the number plate? e.g if it was BE11 END would you get the option to swap it for something else?

If I was offered that numberplate I would keep it and sell it to an estate agent

I got a choice of numberplates. But none were anything special.

George_H - that's pretty cool, didn't realise they'd allow that.
