what tyres for sand/ glacial till?

The paths by me are Canadian tundra, which basically means lots of loose sand with (sometimes quite large) pebbles and cobbles thrown in for good measure. Sometimes hard, but it can often be soft and boggy if wet.

What tyres would suit this type of riding? I have 2.1" Maxxis 'Aspen' on, which came with the bike and it's a hardtail with RockShox Recon Gold up front. I find the grips quite small and largely spaced and not particularly bitey...

One of these would be perfect, although I admit it is not a set of tyres, and you would probably struggle for tyre clearance on your bike!

I'm guessing based on the above the widest ones your frame will allow and then mess around with running them at different pressures... the surly's are designed for sand and snow and water! So it would make sense that the closer your bike resembles them the better...
