K20 DC5 - Engine Problems
Discussion
Hi
I am posting on behalf of a friend who is not yet a member.
I'm sure the PH masses can come up with something.
Ok so the car in question is 2002 Honda Integra type R with about 85k miles on the clock.
I had just parked the car in a carpark and came back to it about for 4hrs later to find it would not start and when it did, it onlyt moved about 5feet before conking out. he said the car was running AOK up until then however the emissions light was on.
he has since taken it to a garage who said 'The belt has skipped a couple of teeth?!' due to lack of oil and that the valves may be bent....
I have broken enough engines to realize that they tend to give some sought of indication that they are dying.
Ideas? because they want £1400 to fit a new engine.

This may sound stupid but have you checked for a spark? I run a 2001 Type R Accord with the 2.2 lump and had similar problems. It turned out that the distributor has a cam sensor inside that goes wrong and blows the amplifier. Honda used to have a problem with this in the earlier models. Dizzies are expensive so look for a grey or black module bolted behind the rotor arm. It'll be that if there's no spark. Not sure about the belt / chain but it's a belt on my 2001 Accord which also has a balance belt which can play up too if running loose.
Hope it helps.

Lack of oil is easy to check - pull out the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert, remove again. If it's bone dry on removal, then whether it has a chain or belt is immaterial.
When was the oil last changed, and checked/topped up?
Were the plugs changed at 60K? If so, then unlikely they're the issue, but no harm in pulling them out to look at.
A fault reader would give an indication of what the EWL is on for - if it is to indicate low oil level/pressure, then the damage has already been done.
A good garage will have checked the battery is giving sufficient cranking current, and the starter is fine as well.
An oil drain will validate if it was low too, so an hour doing those things above should pretty much nail the diagnosis, before removing the head at a greater labour cost.
Honda's petrol engines are very solid, and can take a fair bit of abuse before calling it quits.
Barring a heavily sludged engine, which you'd have felt whilst driving, I can't imagine what else has caused the issue except for lack of oil.

Your 2.2 lump is a 2.3 lump actually.Prelude was a 2.2 unit, along with its AWS.
I believe the DC5 K20 was chain, and coil pack, which the Accord mk VII adopted in '02 from launch.
Could be wrong, but near certain that's correct.
Mine is a 2.2 running the balance belt and cam belt and has since my last post died a death! Some how it ran dry of oil and rattled the little ends out without lighting up the oil level warning light. Only the 2nd Honda lump i've known to die in 20 years and the first one was because the owner was a t
t who thought servicing was done every 10 years. lol. Not looking forward to rebuilding it but it's gotta be done. Love the car too much to give up on her. I just got a touch of bad luck.
