saab 900 as a snotter?
Discussion
A mate of mine has offered me his saab 900 100kmiles 2.0 talladega for £200, with a years mot, just needs tax slapping on it. This comes at a great time as my mk2golf gti seems to be throwing a hissy fit with its electrics, bodywork and exhaust, so for a run around hack while i sort the golf sounds perfect, anyone got any experience of 900s? its an r plate so one of the last before the 9-3 and does anyone know what id get scrap for it if it all went pear shaped? thanks
Superb cars. I had a 900 Turbo Talladega. Dead posh with leather and A/C, cruise etc.
It's based on a Mk3 Astra, so all the running gear is dead simple and easy to work on. with the Saab engine it has no cam belt to worry about, and will go on for at least 250-300k miles with regular oil and water changes. Weak points can be the ignition cassettes. Most people carry a spare in the boot for long journeys, they can be bought for £20 second hand!
There should not be any rust problems at all, unless there's been a shunt.
Do it.

I agree that you need to get it bought; few things though:
"based on a Mk.3 astra". It uses a modified Cavalier floorpan. Slight difference!
The 2.0 n/a is only about 130bhp and it's a heavy car. It will be slow, and you will get very poor fuel economy trying to get it to move! Expect 25-30 mpg.
Early 900s were not great at all, but the late ones were much better and already had many of the 9-3 improvements. Also keep an eye on the bulkhead for cracking, but usually happens on the higher powered cars. Nice place to soak up the miles though.

Indeed there is, hence why I pointed it out. Try removing a rear anti-roll bar from a Cavalier, and see how you get on fitting it to a Saab of this era. You'll find the Mk3 Astra one fits right on.... "based on a Mk.3 astra". It uses a modified Cavalier floorpan.

Saying "based on" makes it sound like under the skin it's the same car. Modified floorpan means basically they shared a piece of pressed steel (and IIRC they used thicker guage steel than GM). Read up a bit on the ng900's development and you will find there were a lot of very angry GM accountants because Saab did a lot of things their own way.
