Now we live out in the country and my commute is down smaller roads I think it's time to switch for winter tyres this season. I'm only going to be able to stretch to part-worns (off ebay) but I was wondering if anybody could tell me whether it's really necessary to get steel wheels to put them on? Obviously this will help protect my alloys but I'm not that precious about them and it will save me about £80. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks.

Everyone in the Scandi countries has a second set of steelies with winter tyres on. Seems that if you're going to the hassle of changing tyres for a season you may as well do it properly and save your alloys too.

It'll cost £10-15 each to get the tyres swaped, and the same again come the spring. I'm noy sure it's worth it.

This. Depends what sort of car, and the availability of pre enjoyed wheels.

It's just an 04 Skoda Fabia. Definitely think it's worth getting some winter tyres as the roads round here are a little rural and the rear tyres are lacking a little tread. Just not sure whether it's worth getting the steels - would mean I don't have to pay to get tyres changed again in spring, just swap wheels - but the local garage is hardly going to charge a fortune to swap some tyres I wouldn't have thought...

You may save £80 by not buying steels but won't you just then have to spend the money getting tyres swapped on and off your existing rims?

I got a full set of alloys for my Z4 for £100 and it's been worth it so far!

My local garage swaps all four wheels on two cars for £15 per car.

This is what I'll be doing. £100 a corner for my 182.

The other option is you run the winter tyres all year round.

That is what i do

Looking for a new pair of boots for the Tuscan and noticed they do snow tyres in the correct size, that could be a giggle.

Interesting idea... anybody know much about all-season tyres?

Practically all the part worn winters I've seen on there will be useless, they are advertised with about 4 mm of tread left which means they're knackered.

A Tuscan works perfectly well with T1R's on in the snow smile

Infact E36 M3's, Astra Coupe's, Megane R26's and Tuscan's "work" in the snow (all on T1R's)

Obviously not deep deep snow but a relative covering is fine.

The pair of steelies I got from a scrappy were only a tenner each, accompanying tyres £48 each, tyres mounted on rims £5 each. I'll be slapping them on the car (driven wheels only) start of November and see how I get on. I hope to get a good few winters out of them.
Now question is, will I spontaneously combust putting them on the fronts only? wink

Probably, post back if you do burst into flames so there is proof.

I'm getting winter tyres but seriously thinking about just storing the summer tyres off rim and swapping them over.

Yes I will. Never owned a set and not planning now. But really, why have any tyres other then winters if you only fit them for 3 weeks in August?
