Help with shimming valves!

My Cerb is long overdue for a check on valve clearances but I can't afford the £800 + I've been quoted. I'm going to do this myself next weekend and I'd be extremely grateful for any advice and loan/hire of any specialist tools needed!

I do most of the work on my car and consider myself fairly competent, but valve clearances is something I leave to the experts. I'm sure you'll find that the £800 you were quoted would be a for a full 12k major service including tappets - and even that's a bit steep. Try Andy at APM.
JensenA is right - I happen to know thst Sebring quote £180 for a tappet check - then additional for the adjustments that might be required.
I did this once on No1 Cerbera - with lots of expert guidance present - it was great!
But I couldn't just do it on my own and remember everything that was involved, enormously satisfying job, mine were mostly within the tolerance, expect for one burnt valve!

I also made a plate with a 1.5mm step to get the initial timing position but in practice I didnt re time the cam as i found i could not improve on the original accuracy.
It's not particulalry difficult but you do need to follow the instructions carefully and its rather tedious. I didnt find it necessary to rotate the engine once the sprockets were off so that makes things simpler. It took me three attempts per side to get all the tappets within 1thou.

Unlike the person I bought the car off!! Supposedly fitted with different cams, but their standard. "Tappets have been adjusted" 3 years before I bought it!!!! "I have a workshop manual and loads of other bits you can have!" 18 months later, still waiting!

Bud you will find tvr garages dont give a price due to the nature of the car.When i had my top bushes done with the mot the mechanic said he could do the bushes in a couple of hours,think i was charged for about 7 or 8 cant remember.Yeah im like you i like to know how much things cost before hand.My trouble was last time the car had tax when it went into the garage and by the time they got it sorted it was out off tax,ie i could not tax it due to no mot so i decided to let them do the work.I like to know before I sign off on any expenditure (not that I pay anyone else to work on any of my cars) but you know what I mean.
