Hi

Had steam ejecting from the spindle area of the water pump yesterday and also noticed that the pulley wheel seemed wobbly. I guess new pump required now. Before i shell out, anyone know of a good place or places to go hunting and what particular spec? I've read there are quite a number of subtley different versions depending on the exact engine. Rimmerbros has quite a few ranging from about £40 up to £120 and obviously cheaper the better.

thanks

Rob

Had my pump replaced after coming back fro Le Mans, Local garage near Southampton co'nt fined the correct type, Had the car picked up by David Gerald I understand the pump came from the V8 fitted to the Rover Vittese. Local garage tried all the units fitted to Range Rovers but none matched.

Just checked the invoice pump / gasket was £176.65

Hope that helps

Thanks for that. Seems I'm going to either get lucky or have a bit of a hunt on my hands.

Ironically, I was just reading through Steve Heath's bible at the weekend and just finished the chapter on the water pump.... if this is how it works, next time I'll stop reading on an easier item like the brake pads.

That looks like the right sort of thing.

not sure if this is the exact right one, there are some slightly different looking ones same sort of price
That looks like a serpentine style water pump. The V8S would have a preserpentine front.

OOOOOOPS...

everything sorted, pump fitted and sealed and just turning the torque wrench to check the last water pump fixing bolts were secure and the last one shears off. arrgghhh. luckily its not one of the ones that goes deep into the engine block but one on the flange so the rear of the sheared thread is just visible at the back of the flange. Tried maul grips and all sorts to try and turn it out to no avail. Any suggestions on best course of action. Also, need to drive to car today cos I can't keep it where I repaired it. Think it will ok for a short 20mile journey considering rest of the fixing bolts, gasket and gasket sealant are all fine? Just need to keep an eye of temp gauge and for steam??

Sheered off doing it *up*? That's pretty unusual - the problem is normally undoing them when you may have to heave at them to overcome friction and corrosion. The proper solution is to remove the pump, this should expose enough thread for you to grip and unscrew it. Since it has snapped without any real provocation I suggest you renew all the bolts to be on the safe side.

Thats why I prefer the good old "by feel" method on minor bolts holding on ancillaries and so on, obviously torque wrench for head bolts, big ends etc.
