We use Miller CVL - works well to boost poor 95, or 95 to nearer the Super U/L stuff. Track days the cars get Optimax and CVL, cheap insurance when you can't hear the car pinking because of a crash helmet.

Any idea how much RON it actually increases and are there any performance benefits?

yup I supply millers boosters .. the only one I've found to do what it says on the tin .. top stuff and cheap insurance especially on early high compression cerberas or well tuned rover V8 cars. SP6 cars shouldn't need any boosters at all .. again it's cheap to buy just in case but if your sp6 car is pinking it's worth investigating further ..

Jules,
thanks for the advice, i don`t get pinking from my SP6, but was woundering whether there would be any
improvments either drivability or performance to be had by sticking in some Millers with a tank of optimax?

none at all .. it's a symptom-cure for cars that run on the limit of detonation, not an issue on sp6 cars.

So to take that logic back a step, why bother with Optimax and not just use the normal unleaded on sp6 engined cars?

Maybe it is, but the suggestion was that they run better on higher octane fuels, so why is there no benefit in taking the octane rating beyond the levels of Optimax when the sp6 cars self map?

I personally think that you only need to use a higher octane fuel if you have problems with pre-ignition. BUT the use of brand name fuel, normally results in a higher quality fuel which will burn more efficiently... this could be the difference people are observing - a higher quality rather the the higher octane rating. As has been mentioned, the S6 engine is set up to run on 95ron fuel - if there are problems with pre-ignition when running on this, I would suggest the engine management software was checked first before changing to a higher octane fuel...

Confusion.
No problems with pre-ignition.
Self mapping ECU.
Is there a benefit to using higher octane fuel beyond 95.

In my opinion No - only benefit would be in using a higher quality fuel ie Shell as opposed to a supermarket fuel....

So the ECU wouldn't allow the engine to run more advance?

no, but optimax has excellent detergents in there which maintain efficiency .. reason enough to use it in my book.
