After much planning and deliberation my heart won me over and I bought myself a little Mk1 MX5 at the weekend!

Having read the common faults wiki and found this warm transmition tunnel can sometimes be remedied by changing the rubber turret boot that sits under the centre console I have decided that I'd give it a bash one evening through the week if it really is as simple and cheap as it's made out to be!

Having said that however, I wouldn't really have a clue where to start hehe Has anybody carried out a similar fix themselves before and willing to share some useful advice or a walkthrough of some sort?

Thanks in advance! thumbup

You'll be wanting to addd www.miata.net/garage to your favourites toolbar then!

Heres a walkthrough for the gearbox turrets, from that site -

http://www.miata.net/garage/trans/everything.html

Turret boots start about 2/3 of the way down, very easy job. Any oil will do in the turret really, bit of spare engine oil or whatever.

Remember to plug your window switches back in before screwing the console back together!

Thanks for that, will give it a good read through!

Here's the other thing, the electric windows also seem to be buggered. Not really sticky or slow, just not working hehe

Going to have the door panels off and investigate that, will be handy to have a look at the switches too with the console off.

Check fuses first. Check powers getting to the motors in the doors (use a multimeter).

If not - an oddity of the MX-5 is that it doesn't use relays for the window motors (lightweight, aint it!) so the full current goes through the switches - they can burn up a bit, so check for power at the switch. If you think you need to replace the switch you'll find one cheap at a breakers.

Ahhh, good advice - cheers!

I'll give that a bash in the morning and let you know how I get on, if unsuccessful there will no doubt be many more questions asked hehe

I get this on my MK2.. I've changed the boots and stuff. Have no cat so it's not that getting warm.

Decided I'm going to get some insulation stuff and wrap it around the centre console.

I changed mine a few days ago. Going to have to take it apart again though as I forgot to make sure the lever was straight up, so it's a little offset to the front right (I've a LHD car). However there is some insulation around the gear lever, so if you don't have any that could be the problem.

I now regret doing this job though, it's made the car much colder now, just in time for a Norwegian winter!

I've still got the insulation in mine, it's after a long drive 1-2+ hours, it gets warm by the seats.

One word of advice....make sure that the black plastic ring that sits on the lever is put on BEFORE you attach the new shift boot. I didn't, and once the boot is on it wont come off unless you cut it! I had to improvise and cut the ring then glued it back together hah.

My MX-5 has a killswitch for the windows mounted alongside the foglight and mirror switches to the right of the steering column - this could be the cause of your non-working windows.

It definitely didn't take me several hours to figure out why my windows weren't working after this had been accidentally flipped, oh no sirree. smile

Kill switch?

(I seem to be turning into a parrot. I've never see a black plastic ring on the gear stick or an electric window kill switch on an MX5).

Yeah it's a simple on/off switch that stops the window switches in the centre console doing anything. (I don't have a photo atm and the car is in my garage feeling sorry for itself waiting for me to find/fit a new engine.) Much like you'd see on a bigger car to disable the rear window controls from the driver's seat to stop the kids in the back from arsing around.

I've no idea why anyone would think it makes sense in a 2-seater roadster.

I can only assume someone fitted that themselves because of having a child in the pax seat or something. Pretty sure it's nothing Mazda have ever fitted.

They did, Mine has one too. It's 100% OEM.

Random 'extra' to have fitted on a 2 seater car, though my DelSol had one too...

The plstic ring is normal too, you're losing your touch Lazza :P
