I thought I'd try the lounge as the Jag forum seems quite slow.

I am seriously considering buying a used XJ Diesel as they seem to be great value for money.

Lots of info about the Merc's, Audis, BMW's - but very little about these cars.

So what kind of running costs are we looking at? I used to have a 535d - similar?

Fuel - my driving is 75% motorway. Am I going to get better than 35mpg overall?

How reliable are they? Jags of old don't have a great reputation here, are these any better?

I would be looking at ~06 cars and a budget of ~£13,000 and ideally a car with under 60k miles.

Talk to me!

I'd hope you could get at least 35mpg, if not more with a lot of motorway driving. I had the 3.0 petrol and averaged 27-28 overall - a lot depends on how you drive of course.

I'm sure there will be plenty out there who disagree but the X350/1 is just a special place to sit in; supremely comfortable, effortless on motorways. Try one then buy one!

Thanks, I have decided to put comfort as a priority this time as opposed to performance. I spend so much time in the car, so it makes sense that it's a comfy place to be!

I don't drive like a boy racer, and I think the Jag would encourage me to cruise anyway!

I am just a little concerned over MPG as I sold my 535d due to averaging 27-28mpg over about 15k miles (75% motorway). Although I think the character of the car encouraged me to drive faster.

I've got one, I get 36mpg if I'm on the dual carrigeway/motorway for most of a tank. Not quite as good as my BMW 5 3.0d used to be.

However I got rid of the BMW because it was just so boring inside, after 6 months the Jag is still great every time i get in!

No problems so far, I'm expecting the 10,000 mile services to alternate £200/£400, with one big one @£700 somewhere down the line.

Hmmm, so you get 36mpg on the motorway? or is that the average over a journey including stop start driving and motorway?

If the motorway mpg is 36 then that seems quite poor? I used to average better than that on the motorway in my 535d, it was just the 25% town driving that killed the mpg.

I was hoping I would average 35mpg+ overall with the car, is this unrealistic?

I know someone who has one and gets around 35mpg.

By comparison, he got around 25mpg from the 3.0 petrol version.

I have one and get 38mpg mostly on the motorway, doing 'normal' motorway speeds. Just had a park brake fault and it will need the rear wishbone bushes changing soon

OK now the owners are here!

How do you feel about the car?

Running costs, any common problems, image etc.

I am already getting the old man jokes from people (I'm 28) wink

My average says 32.6 at the moment, including some very short journeys. What I mean is, if there's ever a tank of fuel used entirely driving to work (so includes the cold starts, 5 miles local roads, 20 miles dual carrigeway, usually not much traffic) it will average 36 over the tankful. No idea how Clarkson got from south of France to Blackpool.

Definitely using more than my 530d used to, and definitely worth it, IMHO.

Ah I see, that's better then.

What was the MPG in your 530d? manual or auto? E39 or E60? If E60 Pre or post LCI?

I'm only asking as I assumed that the 530d wouldn't be that far off what I got on my old 535d.

It was an E60 2006 M-sport manual. Where the Jag is averaging 32.5 it would average 36, where the Jag is averaging 36 it would do 40. Just thinking my Jag has the 255/40/18 wheels, the smaller wheels might be a tad more economical.

The point is that I sold the BMW at a loss after 3 months, it was just too boring. The Jag is still growing on me after 6 months.

I thought the 535d I had was fantastic. The MPG was the only killer.

I suppose the difference in MPG with your Jag and BMW may be due to the manual vs auto.

Taking that into account, that's quite impressive for a car that is 7 series/S class sized.

It's just a little concerning that there is very little info available on this car as opposed to the german marques.

The lack of Jag specialists compared to the german marques is also a slight concern - I see no point in keeping main dealer history as I will probably keep this car for a while and do ~25k miles a year.

Is reliability on these cars on par with the german competetion?
