I know these are poor on the wedge but mine actually worked quite well and was quite tight. Went for a spin last Friday and when i pulled up the lever went through the roof!

It still clamps slightly if i pull it up enough but what would cause it to just simply dissappear like that?

I didn't drive with it left on slightly.

Hi Jim, you've probably lost one of the pads off the handbrake calipers. Same happened to me. Bit fiddly but doable. thumbup

Its a jaguar system and has four separate brake shoes for the hand brake. These are quite small and only held on to the operating arms by (5 mm at a guess) bolts, best guess is either one of the bolt has rusted away or one of the brake pads has fallen/rotted off its mounting plate. It could also be, but less likely, a fault on the cable mountings between the two sides on the diff. Easiest way of having a look, unless you have a ramp or pit, is to remove the offside rear wheel, the exhaust is in the way from the nearside.

Edited to add:- I've had the diff. out recently and used the 'bloody big hole' method as in the link above.

Thanks for the replies. Yes this is what i suspected. Haven't had a chance to have a look yet. Where is the best place to get new pads?

Just a thought, but has one of the bolts come out of the bracket that the handbrake lever attaches to, and the whole assembly is pivoting on one of the bolts.

Well finally managed to get under to have a look and sure enough one of the pads has disintegrated by the looks of it.

The good news however is that judging by the amount of material on the pad and the condition of the handbrake calipers they look like almost new.

The bad news is there is no censored way I can see me getting under there to fix it!

A trip down the road and a quiet word in Goodswens ear I think for a session on their lift.

Yes, they will!

It is a bit awkward changing them without cutting the boot floor, but it can be done.

The ones with the bolts facing outwards are fairly easy, the inner ones a little tricky but you can do it from underneath. Don't be tempted to adjust the cable, use the adjusters on the calipers (big slot, split pin).

Buy a decent set as I have had 2 sets fitted recently (by 2 different garages)
and both new sets have pulled away from the backing of the shoe quite soon after fitting
and consequently dropped out causing exactly the same problem.

I believe mine are now EBC but don't know the part no

All those I've seen have looked like they were made by some jungle tribe from bits of tin can and elephant dung. I think the first rule is: don't overtighten them. It distorts the backplate and probably starts the separation process.

A supposedly reputable Jaguar specialist. The company may be legit but one wonders about the staff.
